A decent movie which presents a difficult dilemma but doesn't make full use of it, and resolves it in typically underwhelming fashion, given the era the film was made in. I can't quite buy Cary Grant as a brain surgeon. Obviously, he could do serious roles, but he's too suave and just doesn't give the air of a brilliant surgeon. The actress playing his wife was nondescript and gave a strange performance that was the antithesis of leading ladies at the time. The movie makes a mistake, in my opinion. Grant should have received the note and been fully aware of the stakes in letting the dictator live But it probably wouldn't have changed the lukewarm outcome. What I would have liked is Grant performs the op but makes a little perforation or something, which induces a very slow bleedout, causing the dictator to die hours or days after the surgery.

Interesting thread and a well-remembered film, Rocks. Thanks for posting.
Another movie with a similar plot (visiting American brain surgeon must secretly operate on a country's dictator) was released the same year as CRISIS.
Now called THE GREAT MANHUNT (original title was STATE SECRET), it starred Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as the reluctant operating doctor and Jack Hawkins as an ordering functionary.

Many many years since I saw Crisis but I remember liking it. Saw State Secret on tv about 10 years ago and thought - what a rip-off. But they were made in the same year, so who knows. If only Victor McLaglen had made a similar movie we might have seen all the Gunga Din sergeants in a trilogy of "brain surgeons saving dictators" roles.

Cary Grant tried many times to break out of his well-established movie persona, and this is one of them, working with a not yet established director, Richard Brooks, in his first directorial effort.
