Strictly looking at what won in relation to the other nominee's the winner was up against, I would say the ones that seem to be pretty much undisputed (or close enough)... -The Godfather (1972) (Deliverance would be the only one I could see the common person even considering in my estimations to challenge it but overall I feel confident enough to list The Godfather in this topic) -Rain Man (1988) (this seems like a solid choice given the rest of the nominee's this year seem to be pretty much forgotten) -The Silence of the Lambs (1991) (this seems like a solid choice for the topic as it seems comfortably ahead of the competition from what I can tell of this year's noms) -Schindler's List (1993) (I don't really see much challenging this besides maybe The Fugitive on a mainstream level) -Braveheart (1995) (I don't see anything else even slightly challenging this one besides 'maybe' Apollo 13. but overall I think Braveheart is enough to claim it's undisputed) -Gladiator (2000) (I don't think this can be questioned on a mainstream popularity judgement and I am confident this will be the most remembered movie in the long term of the best picture nominee's of the year 2000) -The Departed (2006) (this seems like a pretty easy choice overall as it's easily got the most mainstream appeal of the nominee's this year) NOTE: I am just sticking with roughly the 1960's to date in my choices. also, only 5 out of the 7 movies I listed I personally score a 7/10 or higher but I think the two I did not care for all that much (i.e. The Silence of the Lambs(5/10)/Schindler's list(6/10)) seem to be enough to list in a topic like this. also, there might be a little debate on my choices but I think it's not easy to outright say that I am wrong on the choices I made with most people. also, I held off on listing Unforgiven because of A Few Good Men as these two are the clear cut choices on a mainstream level for 1992. but I think there is some doubt there, in my estimations, which is why I held off on listing Unforgiven in my choices. twothousandonemark I think it depends on how one looks at it... I think Good Will Hunting/L.A. Confidential are solid enough among movie types of people to put some doubt against Titanic. but if you want to bring that mainstream appeal into it then you could make a solid case for Titanic due to the high $ it made. so I can't say your totally wrong on listing Titanic but I don't think it's as clear cut as some choices are from other years.
p.s. for the record... personally, I think Good Will Hunting blows away the nominee's that year and is within my Top 23 movies straight up.
Vits Personally I think The Green Mile would be easily the winner on a mainstream level of the nominee's of 1999 as I am confident that movie has the most appeal with the masses (and with a wider range of age groups) in the long term. I would be surprised if I was wrong on claiming this looking at the nominee's of 1999. about the only other two I can think of possibly worth mentioning with a large enough chunk of the general public liking it (or more movie types of people) would be American Beauty, of which I don't care for, and The Sixth Sense, which I also don't care for. p.s. for me personally... The Green Mile (1999) (8-8.5/10) is hands down the best movie of the nominee's of 1999 as nothing else is even close. NOTE: The Green Mile is my #2 movie of 1999 in general though. TheGoodMan19 I think your right in that Dances with Wolves is NOT the clear cut undisputed winner of 1990 which is why I am surprised that kolchak92 even mentioned it as Goodfellas is clearly popular enough to challenge it on a mainstream level. like I think Goodfellas is debateably more popular than Dances with Wolves. hence, Dances with Wolves is disqualified for the topic. p.s. but personally... I think The Godfather Part III is easily the best of the nominee's this year even though I acknowledge that Goodfellas seems to be the more popular movie. James I think your right on Silence of the Lambs and your pretty much right with Rocky on a mainstream level but I think there is some doubt given it seems, at least based around here and IMDb etc, Taxi Driver seems to get fairly high praise to where if you go by the more 'movie people' standard I don't think Rocky would be undisputed although if you go more by mainstream appeal I suspect Rocky would be the choice of 1976 for sure as it's pretty safe to say it's the most known movie of 1976 by the masses. p.s. for the record... I think Taxi Driver is quite overrated as it's nothing special. I still mildly like Rocky though.

Vits, I've never heard anyone complain that Deer Hunter robbed Midnight Express. And I probably prefer Midnight Express myself.

Wrong, way wrong.
Casablanca, I'll buy. Amadeus and On the Waterfront, they aren't bad. Gone With the Wind, really conceding a lot
No way on the others. Shindler's List should have been much better, but it was too Hollywood. The other two are two of the worst movies ever made. Unforgiven is simply a control freak director, which is the Hollywood mode, making fun of his own viewers, bragging over how he'll make them like a human monster, a killer of women and children. Eastwood succeeds in being the formula director, but only for the most feeble minded, which unfortantely is most people in Western culture.
Godfather is simply mob propaganda, paid for by the mob, make no mistake, to keep people under their thumb mentally, to think only demi gods manage to control the mob. This is necessary for the mob to be able to keep control, and the feeble minded lunatics alone are the ones who "like" this pile of the usual Hollywood hate mongering garbage. Made only for "haters".
Epic fail, but obviously the feeble minded sheep of the world will nod along with you.
undisputed? Well, sane people dispute what lunatics don't, and on IMDB the lunatics are in the majority, you have to admit.
So, I'll list "undisputed among non-lunatics" for a change. Any "undisputed" is going to be dicey in any case, as there is always competition, until one gets to the weak seventies and eighties.
My list: ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, one of the two best winners ever.
PATTON, but it was a very weak year
PLATOON-Basically, this is a modern war version of All Quiet.
FORREST GUMP-no competition
LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING, the other of the two best Academy Award winners. A real travesty that the other two parts of the trilogy didn't win, but the usual Hollywood hate formula beat those two out.
Some that may qualify, though some may dispute them: Mutiny on the Bounty, The Hurt Locker, Ben Hur, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (by virtue of being in a weak year). There really are no other plausible Academy award winners. They're all pretty much the same "hater" formula.

Some of these I don't think are undisputed because a lot of people prefer other nominees: Rebecca The Best Years of Our Lives The Bridge on the River Kwai THE GREAT DICTATOR, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and 12 ANGRY MEN. The Sound of Music The Godfather Part II Terms of Endearment Platoon The Silence of the Lambs American Beauty Million Dollar Baby The Departed The Artist DR. ZHIVAGO, CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION, THE BIG CHILL/THE RIGHT STUFF, THE MISSION, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE AVIATOR/SIDEWAYS, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA and THE DESCENDANTS/HUGO/MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. AMERICAN BEAUTY was the rare case where most people think it's the best of the nominees, but there were so many other non-nominees that deserved to win. CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION. The Godfather Part II The Silence of the Lambs CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. I'll go with West Side Story. Disagree on Unforgiven 1) JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG. 2) Why? 1974 - The Godfather Part II 1986 - Platoon 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs 2011 - The Artist CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION, THE MISSION, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE DESCENDANTS/HUGO/MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. onevthat hasn't been mentioned I don't hear a lot of dissent over is The Deer Hunter. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. Rocky and The Silence of the Lambs 1) Every other nominee except BOUND FOR GLORY. 2) BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Mutiny On The Bounty (35) The Sound Of Music (65) Midnight Cowboy (69) The Godfather Part 2 (74) The Silence Of The Lambs (91) Titanic (97) The Hurt Locker (09) TOP HAT, DR. ZHIVAGO, BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID, CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. THE REVENANT and maybe MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. I would think most people are in agreement that Dances With Wolves deserved its Best Picture Oscar. GOODFELLAS. L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. The following I think are good examples: It Happened One Night Schindler's List The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King All Quiet on the Western Front Ben-Hur Schindler's List 1930 - All Quiet of the Western Front 1932 - Grand Hotel 1953 - From Here to Eternity 1972 - The Godfather 1993 - Schindler's List Wings (27) All Quiet On The Western Front (30) Ben Hur (59) Judgement at Nuremberg was great but West Side Story was bombastic, and I'm not a fan of musical. I'm a Clint Eastwood fan, and while I agree with Gene Hackman's Oscar, I found Unforgiven to be a simplistic Western, and not a very good one.

Once again, people, it's all personal opinion. I'm sure there are sane people out who think Paul Blart: Mall Cop got screwed at Oscar time. As I said, I never cared for Chinatown. I know I'm in a very tiny minority. I don't like musicals, so I don't like West Side Story. But it's kind of silly to say that I'd have given the statue to The Hustler.
Damn, I'm surprised no one got on my shit for The Artist.

I'd take one Godfather II over ten Chinatowns myself, but there's a fair amount of debate over which was better, hence "disputed". And I thought about "getting on your sh*t" for The Artist, since it's kind of already forgotten and seen as gimicky, but there wasn't really a favorite movie it beat that year.

You can make an argument for every nominated film. It might be a stretch, but you can do it. I've seen every nominated film, but three (just crossed Lady Bird off the list). There are some that are dated, some that are somewhat ordinary, some were pretentious films designed to just get a nomination, many that you could make a case for movies that were left out. But no nominated film was awful. Never did a Plan 9 From Outer Space or Battlefield Earth sneak in. Take the aforementioned Lady Bird. I didn't like it. My high school life was more exciting. Thought it was boring and ordinary. But it was very well crafted and there were good performances.

LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA. -Rain Man (1988) -The Silence of the Lambs (1991) -Braveheart (1995) -Gladiator (2000) -The Departed (2006) DANGEROUS LIAISONS, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, APOLLO 13, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON/TRAFFIC and LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA. I liked it, but I know most people consider it to be the weakest winner of the decade (so far).

mslo79 I haven’t even seen Taxi Driver, but Rocky holds a special place in my heart.
Yeah, that's fine and all but given the topic it's basically saying which movies are pretty much 'undisputed' best picture winners of the respective year in comparison to the nominee's basically.
Based on $$$ in the theaters you only got about two legitimate cases against my choices which are...
-Beauty and the Beast (1991) (but this is a animated movie and, I don't know about you, but I generally don't include animated movies in the same category as movies with actual people in them. but if one does count this then my choice of The Silence of the Lambs would be disqualified because it would not be undisputed then)
-Apollo 13 (1995) (so strictly based on $$$ in the theaters Braveheart would be disqualified from the topic because of the 'undisputed' term. although... I do think Braveheart (1995) has more staying power as the decades pass and in this regard it 'might' still count on some level and seems to, at least based on IMDb, seems to have more people that really praise it etc.)
the rest of the movies seem to comfortably favor my choices over those you listed based on $ in the theaters...
-Dangerious Liaisons ($34.7mil) vs Rain Man ($354.8mil) ; plus, not to mention I am confident there are plenty of people who are familiar with Rain Man unlike Dangerous Liaisons due to Tom Cruise. seems pretty undisputed here.
-Crouching Tiger($213.5mil)/Traffic($207.5mil) vs Gladiator ($460.6mil) ; so as you can see... Gladiator is more than double the $ of those two. or... Gladiator made more $ than those two movies combined worldwide according to Boxofficemojo. I think that's pretty much enough to say it's undisputed, even though it might not be blowing the other two you mention away, and I am confident Gladiator will be one of those movies people will remember as the decades pass where as the other two probably not as much.
-Letter from Iwo Jima ($68.7mil) vs The Departed ($291.5mil) ; seems pretty clear cut here and I am confident The Departed will be more remembered long term.
bottom line... going strictly by $ in the theaters you made a legitimate enough case to refute my 1991 and 1995 picks given the 'undisputed' word in the topic. but the rest... I still think I got a credible case
I don't think that's entirely true in terms of the topic because we have some ways to measure things like $$$ in the theaters etc to gauge whether something is 'undisputed' (or at least in that ball park) or not.

mslo79 Why are you looking at box office results? They're not a reflection of quality. They're not really a reflection of popularity either. They're a reflection of marketing. I mean, people buy the ticket before watching the movie. Sure, word of mouth can be a factor, but the friend you recommended the movie to may not have the same opinion.

-Braveheart (1995) (I don't see anything else even slightly challenging this one besides 'maybe' Apollo 13. but overall I think Braveheart is enough to claim it's undisputed) There were much better films that should have won that year

I would think most people are in agreement that Dances With Wolves deserved its Best Picture Oscar. Fuck Dances with Wolves, overlong boring ass movie that is a cure for insomenia. Goodfellas should had won because of an excellent script, 3 guys who maybe crooks but they are quite charismatic and all.

A lot of love for Wings. But the Best Picture that cycle was Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. By a country mile.
I'll go just by the nominated films alone, since Ive seen all but three...
1929-30 - All Quiet on the Western Front 1946 - The Best Years of Our Lives 1953 - From Here to Eternity 1972 - The Godfather 1984 - Amadeus 1986 - Platoon 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs 1992 - Unforgiven 1993 - Schindler's List 2011 - The Artist
Short list but I'm going by "Undisputed". Casablanca was a great film. So was For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Ox-Bow Incident. Some years, 1939, 1950, 1967, it's impossible to make a choice. So I got years like 1986. I thought Platoon was head and shoulders above the other four nominated films. Some years the wrong movie won. I would have named 1996 had Fargo beat The English Patient.
