Every year, there's a big number of people who disagree with the winner of this category. Sometimes they think the winner is bad; other times they think the winner is good but not as much as another nominee. Which movies don't create this debate? These ones come to mind: AMADEUS; CASABLANCA; THE GODFATHER; GONE WITH THE WIND; ON THE WATERFRONT; SCHINDLER'S LIST; UNFORGIVEN.

based solely on the nominees -
It Happened One Night Rebecca Casablanca The Best Years of Our Lives On the Waterfront The Bridge on the River Kwai Lawrence of Arabia
....there's a few others I agree with but it's too close to call

Difficult question. To be undisputed, you have to have a great winner in a mediocre field. Example, I couldn't say Gone With the Wind because you could make a case for The Wizard of Oz. Tough to Say Lawrence of Arabia because To Kill a Mockingbird was a fine picture. That being said...
1930 - All Quiet of the Western Front 1932 - Grand Hotel 1953 - From Here to Eternity 1972 - The Godfather 1974 - The Godfather Part II 1986 - Platoon 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs 1993 - Schindler's List 2011 - The Artist
This is no way a mark of a great film. I think Grand Hotel is a tad stodgy and melodramatic. But compared to the rest? The Champ, Five Star Final, Bad Girl, Arrowsmith, etc? And I've seen them all.

On that note, onevthat hasn't been mentioned I don't hear a lot of dissent over is The Deer Hunter.

Although I agree with the wins of the 2 Godfathers, I didn't put them on my list because Cabaret (72) and Chinatown (74) are so close behind.

All personal taste of course.
The Deer Hunter was close but the wedding scene just drags on too long. Not a banner year for movies but I liked Midnight Express.

I would think most people are in agreement that Dances With Wolves deserved its Best Picture Oscar.

Some of these I don't think are undisputed because a lot of people prefer other nominees: Rebecca The Best Years of Our Lives The Bridge on the River Kwai THE GREAT DICTATOR, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and 12 ANGRY MEN. The Sound of Music The Godfather Part II Terms of Endearment Platoon The Silence of the Lambs American Beauty Million Dollar Baby The Departed The Artist DR. ZHIVAGO, CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION, THE BIG CHILL/THE RIGHT STUFF, THE MISSION, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE AVIATOR/SIDEWAYS, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA and THE DESCENDANTS/HUGO/MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. AMERICAN BEAUTY was the rare case where most people think it's the best of the nominees, but there were so many other non-nominees that deserved to win.[/quote] CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION. The Godfather Part II The Silence of the Lambs CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. I'll go with West Side Story. Disagree on Unforgiven 1) JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG. 2) Why? 1974 - The Godfather Part II 1986 - Platoon 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs 2011 - The Artist CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION, THE MISSION, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE DESCENDANTS/HUGO/MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. onevthat hasn't been mentioned I don't hear a lot of dissent over is The Deer Hunter. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. Rocky and The Silence of the Lambs 1) Every other nominee except BOUND FOR GLORY. 2) BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Mutiny On The Bounty (35) The Sound Of Music (65) Midnight Cowboy (69) The Godfather Part 2 (74) The Silence Of The Lambs (91) Titanic (97) The Hurt Locker (09) TOP HAT, DR. ZHIVAGO, BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID, CHINATOWN/THE CONVERSATION, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. THE REVENANT and maybe MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. I would think most people are in agreement that Dances With Wolves deserved its Best Picture Oscar. GOODFELLAS. L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. The following I think are good examples: It Happened One Night Schindler's List The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King All Quiet on the Western Front Ben-Hur Schindler's List 1930 - All Quiet of the Western Front 1932 - Grand Hotel 1953 - From Here to Eternity 1972 - The Godfather 1993 - Schindler's List Wings (27) All Quiet On The Western Front (30) Ben Hur (59)
