I thought this would be an interesting idea for a thread. Basically, what popular movies that you somehow never saw were a lot different than you thought they would be when you finally saw them?

The Sweet Smell of Success, which was Tony Curtis finest performance.

The Big Lebowski. I guess I was expecting more of a traditional neo-noir or something from it, but the actual movie took me by complete surprise.

Moonlight – I expected facile cheerleading for the gay world but it's a very well crafted film.

I thought Good Will Hunting would actually be about hunting.
I thought Pulp Fiction would be a flat out comedy.

Game Night - I thought the story was primarily about a game. I heard a lot of good things about it but none of them really divulged the plot.
It - Thought it would be far more gory and scary.

Recently, A Quiet Place. Never knew about it having little dialogue.

The Departed.
It took me a while to get around to it. No idea why. Eventually my expectations became so high that when I watched it, it was even better than that.

I thought Napoleon Dynamite was gonna be just hi-larious.

I thought Napoleon Dynamite was gonna be just hi-larious. It was...gosh! "Are you gonna eat your tots?"

Edit- Gentleman Broncos, by the same writer/director though is one of the absolute worst movies I have ever seen. I just couldn't finish it and that is extremely, extremely rare for me. I love so called bad movies. But GB is abysmally boring and disjointed. What I could take seeing it. Easily in my top 3 of crap movies with G.I. Joe and Doppleganger.

"Gravity"
Big space nerd here. Fan of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as well. Also a big fan of having a couple of brownies and going to blow my mind at the IMAX when a movie like this comes out.
I thought it was going to be all eye-candy and hyper-realistic. It was stunning to look at. Some of the science was a little questionable, but I didn't mind because the narrative was way more interesting that I was expecting. I was just expecting a fireworks show (and got one), but got a pretty cool character study too.

Some of the science was a little questionable. . . More than just a little! Newton''s laws of gravity were tossed out the window just to create fake drama, ironically enough given the title of the movie.

Edge of tomorrow. Expected A LOT after seeing the score on RT. It is an OK movie, but I was disappointed. No thought went into creating the Aliens. They look EXACTLY the same as the Sentinals in THE MATRIX movies. Very poor design, some truly awful and choppy editing.

The Nice Guys. I actually blind bought it on blu because Gosling & Crowe & its premise. I was expecting Anchorman comedic lane, & thankfully it works so much better as dark humour in reality.

48 Hrs. I saw it when it opened in 1982, being only eighteen at the time I wasn't familiar with Walter Hill's work, and it starred Eddie Murphy. So I was expecting a straight-up comedy, and instead got a violent crime drama with comedic elements (and most of it dark at that) sprinkled in. Not what I was expecting, but still loved it just the same.

They could have done well to double the scientific advisory team's budget. All of the various "safe havens" were all just a short float away. You'd think the Earth was the size of a marble.

Apocalypto.
I don't know exactly what I was expecting but I definitely wasn't expecting an action/chase movie.
