When all cats had fur, lagomorphs knew their place on the food chain, and raccoons rummaged through your neighbor's trash for the Sunday New York Times so they could work the crossword but left your trash alone because they knew you'd already worked the puzzle.

I remember when my wife passed in childbirth and my fifth daughter died of consumption. I drowned my sorrows by wetting my whistle in that rather forlorn time and entertained myself by taking my motor car to a nearby picture show. It was after dark but I had functioning headlamps. I had difficulty cranking it. The entire ordeal was rather splendidly forthright.
