Is anyone else surprised that this hasn't been remade yet?

Its message seems even more relevant today then it was 30 years ago.

I can't get excited about this news because of "Escape from L.A."

Not really. It has a following, but certainly no where near the level of nostalgia of other 80s horror films (NOES, Friday the 13th, Hellraiser, etc). In any case, it looks there have been attempts before:
"In Fall 2010, there was development on a remake of Carpenter's 1988 film They Live, with him in a producer role. In 2011, Matt Reeves signed on to direct and write the screenplay.[26] Since then, there has been no new announcements, ending up in development hell."

They will radically change it.
Even though the movie was advertised as being about Reaganomics it has taken to symbolize current political situations--you had a working class white guy as a hero-and lots of white people living in tents. Carpenter is livid about that (it definitely wasn't his intention--just that in 1988 having a movie full of white faces wasn't unusual).
So the hero of a remake will be a Mexican guy or a woman and the bad guy alien will be calling for limits on immigration.
Guaranteed.
