Either helping or hurting... I haven't read much criticism, but I remember reading Pauline Kael's enthusiastic review of Nashville, which hadn't even come out yet. This was a book reviewing a review, and mentioned that although Kael had got too close with Altman, that it helped a movie that might have never received any popularity.

The original Halloween was dying a slow death when it was released in 1978 (it didn't get a wide release, it was opened in different markets for short runs). Then it opened in Chicago (roughly two months after hitting its first markets), and Roger Ebert gave it a stellar review; he along with another critic in NYC who also gave it a positive review at the same time changed its course, and the movie took off from there. Carpenter has said he'd already passed the movie off as a failure and was shocked when he learned it had become a hit.

Fight Club did not do well at the box office. Tanked is my understanding, and I remember at the time that it didn't take off. You'd never think that the way it's talked about now. You would think it was an unassailable success from the beginning.

Speaking of General Kael, her review of Bonnie & Clyde is noted for increasing its exposure.

It seems like Harry Knowles at one time was a powerful critic although he apparently could be bought too.

Armond White proved you don't actually have to watch movies to be a film critic

No doubt Ebert played a role many times over the years in one way or the other.

Kael's reviews of Bonnie and Clyde and Last Tango in Paris (and others) ensured their success.
