No one ever brings up this movie. Why? It's a pretty decent thriller with fine performances from Robert Shaw, Bruce Dern, and Marthe Keller. Why does Dern excel as playing unhinged?

I've only seen it once, and that was long ago but you're right, it is a good thriller. I don't remember it being a huge hit back when it was released, pretty hard subject matter to market I guess.

Yeah it does seem to be mostly forgotten these days. It is indeed a good thriller, and one that I need to revisit again because it's been decades since I last saw it.
It's based on a novel written by Thomas Harris, and I believe it was the only non-Hannibal Lecter book he wrote

I saw it only once and thought it was alright. I do remember reading somewhere that the test screenings were so good they were expecting the movie to be another JAWS.
