I find their movies boring, convoluted and mean-spirited. And their supposed humor is totally lost on me.
It's like you take the worst of Tarantino and amplify it and you get a movie like "Fargo". I thought I would watch "Blood Simple" and give them another chance and it was just as unpleasant and BORING as the rest of their movies.

I don't like their weird, hipster movies. Hipster. That's a really good word to describe their movies. They seem very smug to me. At least Tarantino has the gift for snappy dialogue.

They're very talented, the Coens, but they strike me as (maybe) too full of themselves; or maybe they hold themselves too high above the "rabble" to make just plain good (or great movies) that a lot of people would like. But then they made Barton Fink a long time ago, and that was, or so it struck me, as, among other things, a critique of those who see themselves as better than other people, even if "innocent" (as in not in a nasty way), with Barton himself and his attitude treated with merciless satire by the Coens, with his, on the one hand, desire to write films for "the Common Man", then his refusal/inability to have a normal conversation with another human being, a need to hold forth, to behave as if he had already accomplished far more than he in fact had; and so on, and so forth, endlessly talking. Yet he comes across (to me anyway) and more lovably clueless than obnoxiously pretentious. He's not a bad sort, Barton; he just needs more education. In life.
Overall, I haven't seen that much of the Coens' work, and I mean literally; nothing from the 21st century! So consider the source. Something just about the titles of some of their films, the projects they choose to take on, turns me off. It seems that they've achieved something like self-knowledge, and yet they strike me as near suffocating in their hipness. their knowingness. I'm too long in the tooth to want to watch a film to be hip. Back to the Coens themselves: there's certainly a place in Hollywood for them, they know what it is, what to do. It's just that I'm not curious about what they're up to; and no, I'm not at all saying that I (of all people!) am too good for them. More like something along the lines of I've just had it; with irony, I mean. It's everywhere.

Love some, like most of their stuff. Probably my no.1 film makers of the past 30 years.

It would be very unlikely that you are alone.
Myself, I think they are good but a lot of there films sit in the respectable 7/10 range

They've made a few near-masterpeices (Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, No Country For Old Men) along with some missteps that border on self parody (Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading, Hail Caesar!).
I think the have a unique voice and overall I'm glad they're making films. I rate them a little higher than Tarantino, their takes on genre conventions are a little more fun and inventive, IMO of course.

inside llewyn davis reaffirmed them for me. barton fink rules, and there's miller's crossing, fargo, the man who wasn't there, blood simple. I can live without most of the others.

For me they're a mixed bag. Sometimes they do get a bit too quirky for their own good which can be distracting, and other times I've found their work even dull, but they still have made some great films. My favorites are Fargo, No Country For Old Men, and Blood Simple.

I love Fargo, "No Country for Old Men" was pretty good, "Big Lebowski" is a soild (though kidna overrated) comedy, and "Raising Arizona" was decent. Haven't seen anything else.

I don't like their weird, hipster movies. Don't hipsters try to seem hip by being as oddball and obscure as possible? The Coens are far too mainstream for that.
You might be a hipster if your favorite movie is Gummo.

And you're the idiot who thinks that mainstream movies that win Academy awards are "weird hipster movies."
Here's a weird hipster movie.

In the past 20 years, The Academy Awards has become the pretentious Hollywood hipsters celebrating the most smug movies they can make.
