And you're the idiot who thinks that mainstream movies that win Academy awards are "weird hipster movies."
Here's a weird hipster movie.
In the past 20 years, The Academy Awards has become the pretentious Hollywood hipsters celebrating the most smug movies they can make. Yeah, it's overrated trophy shit. I mean, how are we supposed to take something serious that really all amounts to a self congratulatory "award" of a bunch of stuck up snobs that regular Joes like you and me would be lucky if any of them gave us the time of day.

Not that I wish death on her or anything like that, I'll just say the world would not be worse off without Gwyneth Paltrow but of course she thinks the whole world is better because she is in it.

I find their movies boring, convoluted and mean-spirited. And their supposed humor is totally lost on me. It's like you take the worst of Tarantino and amplify it and you get a movie like "Fargo". I thought I would watch "Blood Simple" and give them another chance and it was just as unpleasant and BORING as the rest of their movies. I know this is just one movie, but please explain how The Hudsucker Proxy is "mean-spirited?" And you don't get the humor in that movie?

I've seen a lot of their filmography but interestingly enough I actually like Hail, Caesar! quite a bit. True Grit is a good film too. However, quite a few of their films I could care less about, including the critically acclaimed No Country For Old Men. Hail, Caesar! might be a little over the top with regards to the late '40s/early '50s Hollywood, but I think it does show how it operated. The communism aspect was well done. I thought it was great that the Kirby Grant type singing cowboy character was the true hero of the story.

To hate the Coens is to hate the cinema, life and all things good in life.

They've made a few near-masterpeices ( Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, No Country For Old Men) along with some missteps that border on self parody ( Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading, Hail Caesar!). I think the have a unique voice and overall I'm glad they're making films. I rate them a little higher than Tarantino, their takes on genre conventions are a little more fun and inventive, IMO of course. Totally not trolling here, but Burn After Reading was my favorite film theyve done. I personally think they are overrated and their films are oddly unevenly paced. Did you know, at rest screenings audience after audience said "Fargo" was too farfetched? Solution: put based on a true story at the beginning. And idiots are it up. I cant tell you how many film nerds have sworn to me it's a true story. Someone got kidnapped. Theres yout true story.

From what I’ve seen, they don’t do much for me.

So much hate or even just indifference to the Coens? On a movie site? My faith in humanity takes yet another blow.

Burn After Reading just felt like a bit of a pastiche of a lot of their earlier quirks/tropes to me, too overtly Coen-esque for it's own good. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll probably give it a second chance at some point. Their pacing can feel a little off, but that's never been a real issue for me and has become part of the character of their films. Honestly can't remember how I felt about the "true" aspect of Fargo when I first saw it, when it came out. I've known it wasn't really true for as long as I can recall. Overall I think it's one of their better films.

At this point in time the only movies of their that stand out (stand out as in 7/10 or higher) for me are...
1.True Grit (2010) - 8/10 2.Blood Simple (1984) - 7.5-8/10 -.Barton Fink (1991) -.O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
NOTE: recently No Country for Old Men (2007) went from a 9/10 to a 6/10 for me. I won't be surprised if some others take a hit once I get around to seeing them as I am mainly wondering whether Barton Fink will hold up for me or not as it's the one I listed above that I have not seen in a while as it was March 10th 2015 the last time I re-watched Barton Fink which I suspect ill be re-watching soon (within the next year-ish tops).
with all of that said... I think the OP might like True Grit as I suspect for those who generally don't like the Coen's might like that one, especially if they like Westerns in general. for the record... True Grit (2010)(8/10 ; within my Top 52 movies) is MUCH better than True Grit (1969)(4/10).

Overall I really dig them but I guess I can understand how some folks would be turned off by them (they are an acquired taste I suppose) .
Looking forward to their film coming out soon on Netflix.
