Well Riggs served in Vietnam and is likely more trained with weapons and hand-to-hand combat.
If they fought today, McClane would win since the last Die Hard film proved how miraculously indestructible he is.

If you're in a large building, McLane. In a flat open field with no weapons or other props, riggs wins.
