Because I like them and found them entertaining. Kind of like how the bad guys felt somewhat entertained by killing and torturing. Perhaps that was the point. Certainly some humor in the movies. Of course there has always been a sort of stereotype in regards to people who like horror flicks especially ones with blood and gore. Such is life.

Anyone who thinks you have to be sick in the head to enjoy violence and gore in movies is a dumb piece of shit. That is all.
Oh and by the way I really like the first 2 Hostel movies.

I don’t find anything wrong with that. We all know these are just movies and meant to entertain to the right demographic.
I’ve seen the first Hostel and really liked it. Need to check out the sequels.

Need to check out the sequels. There will always be a stigma attached for liking that kind of stuff. I suppose it's not unlike seeing disaster flicks where entire cities are wiped out while everyone eats popcorn or Fast and Furious for the car wrecks.

I rewatched both recently as well. Which reminds me that I really need to update my list for the challenge. I've been jotting movies down as I watch with the ancient form of pen and paper but I digress. Hostel is still effective and although it has bits that are almost too unpleasant to watch it never really feels like it's merely gratuitous. Hostel 2 was still okay but it seemed they upped the humor some to counter the fact its the same movie. Oddly the victims didn't make me feel as much sympathy for them as the first movie despite being women.

The first one I've watched many times. The sequel wasn't disappointing - which counts for something. There seemed to be a backlash against Hostel at the time, which was undeserved - aside from a few duff excessive moments, it rules.

What is it specifically about it?
It's supposedly an innate voyeurism. People like to see gruesome events and gore recreated for entertainment. (It's when it becomes real, that 'sick' is appropriate, I suppose). Grand Guignol, French theatre, in the late 1800s catered for those who desired such entertainment...and it's from here, splatter on screen, originates. At the time, it catered for the less sophisticated theatre goer; which is something still suggested today - I disagree.

Although, even I was disturbed by those first two movies at the time. I seem to remember them more fondly today, if you can feel that way at all about such subject matter. Horror is always pushing the envelope, and there's always another envelope to be pushed.
