Let me rephrase that: Musicians whose albums you'd buy but whom you wouldn't see in a concert?
In case you can't think of any, a good way to do it is to look at movies and TV. If a musician with no acting training gives a good performance despite not playing themselves (or a semi-version of themselves), it's because they were able to translate their stage presence into a screen presence.

I know I will get flak for this, but Tool. I saw them in concert and Maynard was HORRIBLE. They are in my top three favorite bands of all time too so I am a fan normally. Maynard turned his mic all the way down and hid behind the drumset the entire show. My brother, who has seen them a bunch, says he always does that. Terrible show from an otherwise amazing band.

Any rapper, but as long as someone can sing, I'm not really concerned with theatrics.

That's very... broad and general. I find it hard to believe. I'm not really concerned with theatrics. Oh no, that's not what I was talking about.

I have to admit that rap shows suck just about every time. Without a studio there to clean it up, you realize most of these guys have no talent.

Well, I think they have writing & rhythm talent, but rapping is also as much about the DJ or the producer. So the music drowns out the performance and the rappers have to abandon their normal flow and simply shout. It's painful to hear. The only good live performances I saw are ones where a rapper is more like a poet such as Common (Who's music I don't like) and that Jay-Z Unplugged event he did for MTV years back. Freestyling is also awesome but no one is going to pay money to see that in an arena.

I used to love NAS, Tupac, Biggie, old DMX, Gangstar, Beanie Seagal, etc. I just stopped listening to most of it at the turn of the century. Now it is all about stealing someone's background music from a much better song for their beat and mumbling gibberish over it. Without the studio to clean it up, it sounds just like what it is. Crap.
