I remember when he made that statement. Marxists deny God as the supreme authority in the Universe. They are NOT good people. Regardless how you feel about them, Francis pretty much disavowed Marxism, so accusing him of being a communist is quite silly. In fairness, you can be a communist without being a Marxist. Anarchist communists for instance reject Marx's idea that a period of government-controlled socialism was necessary before full communism. Democratic socialists believe socialism (and then communism) can/should be achieved using existing government structures as opposed to revolution.
At any rate, I don't think Francis is either a Marxist or a communist though he may have sympathies with some of their ideas.

I would guess that her movement would qualify as such to either myself of Pope Francis. Some of these movements in being anti-immigrant also either verge on racism or definitely take the plunge in that direction. The EU's open border policy was a complete disaster, but it appears that anyone who opposes it can be accused of racism. The left in my country, the United States, is also making accusations of racism against those who favor securing the borders against criminals and terrorists. Germany created a problem for the EU as a whole with their too open border policy. No, everyone that is concerned about this or opposed to it is a racist, but many certainly are racist or became somewhat racist as this occurred. Many in the United States that are in favor of more extreme measures to secure the southern border are quite racist and they are not just advocating stopping criminals and terrorists while many concerned about illegal immigration are not racist. You will notice that they are not advocating a wall on the Canadian border?

I don't believe a wall is necessary, but if it is to be done then I think two walls should be built.
