I really felt very underwhelmed by this movie when I saw it actually. I wanted to like it more then I actually did as its very emotionally resounding in parts. I honestly wonder whether they should've excised the police subplot and given the movie a two hander between Reford and Spacek.

I actually found that weaker compared to the subplot between Redford and Spacek. It shouldve been a two hander about the dynamics between Redford and Spacek.

I want to see this purely for Tom Waits. Between this and 'The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs' he's having quite a good year on the big screen.

I really felt very underwhelmed by this movie when I saw it actually. I wanted to like it more then I actually did as its very emotionally resounding in parts. I honestly wonder whether they should've excised the police subplot and given the movie a two hander between Reford and Spacek. Pretty much how I felt. The character dynamics weren't explored enough between anyone, really. The movie is very short, another half an hour could've made the whole thing much more compelling. They probably didn't want to explore the cop/robber dynamic too much because it would feel like a Catch Me If You Can knockoff. They still went there anyway, just to a lesser degree. They kept it lighthearted which steered it away from being the romance film you're talking about. It couldn't decide what it wanted to be, so it was nothing. They never explained why Affleck's character came to understand/respect him. His lawyer told him some wild stories? That makes up for the fact that his daughter said she never knew him and that he should be locked up forever? So many missed opportunities to explore characters here. I would've preferred the knockoff film I alluded to; it would've been completely derivative but at least it would've been fun. I'd give it a 4/10 (low end of average) for solid performances by the entire cast, particularly Redford and Waits. No offense to Spacek, I just don't think she was given anything to do. Redford's charisma carries the robbery scenes (and those flashbacks were great), but at best it gives you a chuckle. There's no real emotion to this film, which is a shame because had they decided on a proper direction to take the story, it could've been something special.

Its really one of the only times the movie alludes to him feeling a bit paranoid over not having lived a meaningful life, I realllly wanted more of that as well.

Yeah the only character who expresses any kind of remorse regarding Forrest is the daughter, and they move on from that scene without looking back. The cat and mouse between Affleck and Redford is sparing and we never get to know Glover's character at all. Waits has that funny anecdote and then disappears from the film entirely. They could've made this a feelgood dramedy or more of a character study on a deeply flawed man, but it was neither. Even the scene where he rides the horse (relevant because he said it was on his bucket list) is come and go, it really should've been played more dramatically. It's just one of those films that never quite finds its way thematically. Why do I feel like there's a director's cut of this film that adds half an hour, explores the relationships further and changes the tone entirely, making it an easy 8/10? It really could've been that good I think.
