The Haunting of Hill HouseRotten tomatoes *Season 1: 91% (8.4 average) Metacritic *Season 1: 80 IMDb v2.0 average: 8.2 (6 votes - updated 23 October 2018) I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard nothing but praise so far so I wanted to know what people who have seen it would rate it. This, Maniac & The End of the F***ing World (and perhaps Killing Eve) seem to be the breakout new tv shows from 2018 based on the hype surrounding them.

I was about to rate it a 10, maybe the only 10 I've entered on this board, but they made elements of the ending too uplifting, as if to make up for all the trauma that occurred in the earlier episodes. Not a needed or good choice. So it got knocked down to a 9 for that alone. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but 1's and 10;s in any rating system should be very hard to earn.

8.5/10. If it wasn't for the last episode or two, it would be a 9. I felt the ending let the series down.

Once you get used to the characters (young and old) and to the pace and style of this show, it becomes extraordinary. The production is first-rate as is the direction. Sure, there are some jump scares here and there, they never seem cheap. They went to great lengths to edit this series so that the stories are nearly seamless as they jump from the past to present. Remarkable work. The scene when Nellie returns back to Hill House is chilling and beautifully structured, with a few twists that were completely unexpected. I'm not surprised this was made by the the director of Oculus, an underrated gem. The cast is excellent, especially the always interesting Carla Gugino. I still have four episode left. So far, I would give it a 10/10. I would buy this on blu ray immediately.
Update: After finishing the series, I am certain Gugino should at least get an Emmy nomination for her extraordinary performance. Timothy Hutton and Henry Thomas are both outstanding as the older and younger versions of Hugh. In fact, the whole cast is really very good.
The look and feel of the series is wonderful. It is not a horror series that depends solely on an endless series of jump scares on top of jump scares. Or much gore. Rather, the scares are more subtle. And more effective.
It is a re-imagining of the original Shirley Jackson novel, which I like but don't love, it still is respectful to the source material in many ways. I am more of a fan of the Robert Wise film.
The final episode ends in ways that may disappoint some modern horror fans. Or maybe it won't. I am not even sure how I feel about it overall. I loved many parts of it. Other parts I am just not sure. It's the kind of series I want to watch again in a few months and see how it holds up.
Right now, I would give it around a 9.5/10.
