Absolutely. Wes Craven poking fun at his own genre is just brilliant. The guy was actually a good comedic writer too. That plus the mystery aspect of this movie make it a fun ride.

I watched it again on TV Friday night with a friend, and we had our own MST3K going on ribbing it throughout, but it’s fine. I appreciate that it’s a mystery, with some attempt at cluing put in, and not just a cut-the-teenagers-to-ribbons slasher. It is really pretty stupid, certainly not as clever as it thinks it is, but I don’t hate it. I think the second one is better, though. It's definitely as clever as it thinks it is.It was something on the phenomenon at the time. It may horror movies cool again.

It's hilarious and a great genre satire. The sequels got repetitive and a satire of themselves though.

kuatorises nailed it on the head. I do think you have to be a horror fan to get the full effect. Also, it wouldn't hurt to be near the age (or age of popularity) of many of the stars. The movie was pretty great about poking fun at familiar horror tropes ("I'll be right back!") but was fresh in its own right. How many automatic garage door opening killings have you ever seen? The schtick with the phone calls was awesome and iconic. It was nice to see Wes Craven have a bit a sense of humor about his older films. There are lots of respectful and humorous callbacks to his earlier works. Also, good call to the above posts comparing it to "New Nightmare" (I thought it was awesome). In some ways I thought it was a bit of a prototype for what he wanted to do with "Scream." It had a notable imitator with "I Saw What You Did Last Summer," (enjoyable) but back to back, "Scream" is the clear winner and is pretty underrated in my opinion. Good horror without crazy gore. Not that I mind gore, but I don't need it all the time... The sequels...meh...except "Scream 4" which is definitely worth a watch

I enjoyed it when I watched it in the theater. At the time it was a fresh and unique take on the slasher genre. I dunno if it still holds up.
