I love both...but fantasy has my vote. I feel its more poetic than sci fi which I like. But damn, Game of Thrones and LOTR vs. Alien/Aliens and The Matrix or Inception? So hard to choose.

Star Wars is a fantasy that happens to be set in space. It's a "space opera"!

Luckily, I get to choose both on this poll but I will say that as a lifetime reader of both genres that Science Fiction does allow for more diversity and exploration. One can easily place fantasy elements onto a Science Fiction setting but Fantasy if you tried to impose the same depth of scientific exploration and elements of change, it would be more or less Science Fiction.
Star Wars has been mentioned as being a Space Opera and this is a good example, the Jedi's and the 'Force' and midi-chlorians tend to take on a magical or mystical property even though they are explained rationally as , intelligent life forms that originated from the foundation of life in the center of the galaxy, and ultimately resided within the cells of all living organisms, thereby forming a symbiotic relationship with their hosts. The Force spoke through the midi-chlorians, allowing certain beings to use the Force if they were sensitive enough to its powers.

i voted for... Sci-Fi.
looking at my IMDb stats it shows this...
-Fantasy 5.06 average, 156 titles -Sci-Fi, 5.05 average, 308 titles
so going by IMDb Fantasy barely has the average in average rating but i would likely still choose Sci-Fi off the top of my head since i am pretty sure the higher ranked stuff in that genre for me tops the Fantasy stuff comfortably. basically had i seen a similar volume of Fantasy movies i would not be surprised if it's average rating fell behind Sci-Fi to.
