One thing that never gets mentioned is that the good guys in The Matrix go around killing cops. The song Cop Killer could literally be The Matrix's theme song. But this is perfectly fine because the world we live in isn't real. Except that if you die in The Matrix you die in real life.
The movie is ridiculous. It was made the Wachowski Brothers,... who are now the Wachowski "Sisters" apparently. It takes conspiracy theorist paranoia to the Gnostic degree by saying that the world itself is a hoax. Not just that the moon landings, or some school shooting, or 9-11 or whatever is a hoax, but the whole entire fucking world. And since the protagonists know so much more than other people it instantly makes them higher beings who can download Kung Fu into their brains and use it to go around killing people.
Terrorism is fine when you've achieved God status. Blow up buildings, crash a helicopter into one like you work for Bin Laden it doesn't matter. The villains are government types who wear suits. You could use the red pill scene to embolden any type of world view no matter how paranoid and stupid. You could use the red pill to symbolize that you've come to the realization that women are whores used by the state as bait to take your earnings in divorce courts in a gynocentric society,... oh wait.

Once in a while, we get these one-note crackpots with their Rob Ager moronic BS film theories.

Once in a while, we get these one-note crackpots with their Rob Ager moronic BS film theories. I am subscribed to him. He makes a compelling case once in a while. I just wish he wasn't so obsessed with Kubrick films. My post though was talking about subtext.

It took me years to understand the matrix movies in its entirety. That the rebellion were the enemy (and of course Smith being the main threat) while the system itself consisting of those plugged in along with the programs who protected and administered everything were really the good guys.
The Matrix and all its incarnations was very close to being the perfect compromise where the majority of both man and machine could live together in peace.

At first, I read "allegory" as "alligator" so now this thread is suddenly less exciting for me.

It's not really allegory when Morpheus and co are straight up labeled terrorists in the first one. If that bothered you, the Wachowski's V For Vendetta will really piss you off.

It came out two years before 9-11, so rather unlikely.
