Patrick McGoohan was a charismatic and successful television actor with Secret Agent and The Prisoner, but never seemed to be able to translate this into film stardom, though he played a number of supporting roles very well over the years. (And was tapped as the first choice to play James Bond, which he turned down--he might well have become a major film star if he'd accepted that role!)
Interestingly, he and Alan Alda, who was mentioned earlier in this thread, co-starred in an early Seventies flick, The Moonshine War.

I remember Cybil Shepherd was kind of peeved that Bruce Willis was able to catapult into movie stardom while she could not (though she had been at it much longer than him). Wasn't she a movie star before the show? I remember "Breaking Bad" fans kept clamoring for Bryan Cranston to play Lex Luthor in a Superman film. Maybe that could have been his big (albeit somewhat late) break into movie stardom. But he is a movie star. Wasn't Roseanne the highest paid TV star for a while? Some might say she doesn't have "Hollywood" looks to become a movie star, but hey if Cathy Bates can make it looks should be the only thing stopping her. Roseanne isn't untalented, but she didn't have enough opportunities to prove herself (unlike Kathy). Her more famous movie roles are arguably LOOK WHO'S TALKING TOO and HOME ON THE RANGE, where she basically played herself. When I was a little kid I remember Fran Drescher being in some forgetable 90s rom com with Timothy Dalton and thinking "Oh, are they making a movie version of "The Nanny"? Yes, BEAUTICIAN AND THE BEAST follows the same plot as THE NANNY, which wasn't that original to begin with. It's as if nobody believed Fran could do something different. Eventually she worked in other sitcoms but, even though the plots were different, her characters' personalities were too similar (they all even have the same name!).

What big movies has he headlined? "Godzilla" was supposed to big his big movie break and it flopped.

To see if Cybil was a movie star pre-TV, check her resume.
Not too many hot films.
Roseanne was in She-Devil, and while it sucked, Meryl Streep and Sylvia Miles give very good performances.

Wasn't she a movie star before the show? Well she had roles-some leading ones too but she was never really on the radar until Moonlighting. And she couldnt turn that into a career boost.

She's not really a good actress, and the same with Candace Bergen

a movie star? What big movies has he headlined? "Godzilla" was supposed to big his big movie break and it flopped. I actually wouldn't have used GODZILLA as an example, since he wasn't the lead. He was the lead in TRUMBO, THE INFILTRATOR, WAKEFIELD, WHY HIM?, LAST FLAG FLYING. There's also THE UPSIDE coming up. To see if Cybil was a movie star pre-TV, check her resume. Not too many hot films. But THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, THE HEARTBREAK KID and TAXI DRIVER are classics. While AT LONG LAST LOVE and THE LADY VANISHES weren't critical or financial hits, she did headline them.

But my aim is not to diminish your love of CS.

Sir, we are dealing with the artist who seems to nothing about movies except what rolls around his mind. Perhaps he will make a decent movie, and we will be able to say, "I remember when I hated him and thought he was a film moron way back when".

Well I don't know, he's been in some pretty high-profile films, like Crimes and Misdemeanors and The Aviator, and got an Oscar nomination for the latter.

Danson is more of a film star So if acting in several critically-acclaimed films, and getting an Oscar nom out of one doesn't qualify you as a film star, what does?

Did Lucille Ball or Desi Arnaz do any particularly notable films after "I Love Lucy"?

Mark Paul Gossellaar (Zach from "Saved By The Bell"). That show and those characters were huge. Gossellaar was a pretty good actor and somehow managed to sell some of the really clumsy and cheesy dialogue on that show. He's still doing TV stuff, but I always figured he'd be up for the big screen. Pulling a Will Smith sort of "Fresh Prince" transition.
I've been crossing my fingers that this wouldn't happen to Steve Carrell, Rainn Wilson, and John Krasinski of the U.S. version of "The Office." Really enjoyed that show, and those actors. They've all since been in great movies since. Fans of "A Quiet Place" (starring and written by Krasinski) may be happy to know he's writing a sequel.
I'd also love to see more Charlie Day ("It's Always Sunny") and David Cross ("Mr. Show", "Arrested Development"). Also Bob Odenkirk ("Mr. Show", "Better Call Saul"). All three are working, but I can't get enough of 'em

I think once you get nominated for Best Lead Actor, you qualify as a successful movie star.

Jack Benny was a notable film flop, but was huge on Radio and TV both for around 40 years.
