He's the first name I thought of. He's pretty much the poster boy for this whole thread. That first season of NYPD Blue was so goid, and he just up and bounced...crazy and risky. The movies he did were not bad, but they made no money. CSI: Miami let him bounce back, but now he seems retired or whatever. If I remember correctly the reason he left NYPD Blue was because he really thought he was going to succeed as a movie star. Guess his ego got the better of him. But his movies flopped at the box office, so it was back to TV.

So if acting in several critically-acclaimed films, and getting an Oscar nom out of one doesn't qualify you as a film star, what does? Being a film star. Is Michael J. Pollard a film star? He's a character actor.

It seems like most TV actors would fit this bill.

Jon Hamm. He's struggling a bit to become a leading man after Mad Men ended. At least he seems to be kept busy. But yeah it's odd he's not giving more meatier lead roles. Because HAMM certainly is BEEFY, enough! Playgirl magazine should offer him ten millions dollars to spread his cheeks for the centerfold. I know I'd pay 8 bucks to see that.

Farrah Fawcett-Majors. Because she backed out of her CA contract early, she was not allowed to do either "Coma" or "Foul Play". And those were both big money makers, I believe, particularly "Foul Play".
Though she did fare rather well in the Made-for-tv movies throughout the 1980s. Even if I didn't much like watching sweet, bubbly, lovely, lithe Farrah suffering all over the place. It really was not her forte. Oh, well. What's past is past.
I do wish she had stayed on board for another year of CA. Jill Munroe was my second favorite Angel, and the show was not the same without her. Jaclyn didn't have the charisma or the acting chops to be "second Angel". "Third Angel" was her best showing.

Mark Paul Gossellaar (Zach from "Saved By The Bell"). That show and those characters were huge. Gossellaar was a pretty good actor and somehow managed to sell some of the really clumsy and cheesy dialogue on that show. He's still doing TV stuff, but I always figured he'd be up for the big screen. Pulling a Will Smith sort of "Fresh Prince" transition. The only stuff that was notable for Mark is "Dead Man on Campus" and a direct-to-DVD movie (Precious Cargo) with Bruce Willis.

Bill Cosby had several TV series over several decades, the most successful being I Spy and The Cosby Show. But audiences weren't exactly rushing to theaters to see Ghost Dad or Leonard, Part 6.

But most of those weren't huge hits which is kinda what "successful movie star" implies. I didn't say "successful." Cybil was not first billed in any of those 5 movies. But she either shared top billing with her co-star or her name was predominant in the poster (in TAXI DRIVER it was more predominant than the other supporting actors). Her face was also shown in a lot of those posters, even if she was alone. But my aim is not to diminish your love of CS. What love? I barely know her work. I'm just going by facts I've looked up online. Sir, we are dealing with the artist who seems to nothing about movies except what rolls around his mind. Perhaps he will make a decent movie, and we will be able to say, "I remember when I hated him and thought he was a film moron way back when". What are you even talking about?

The cast of Buffy/Angel. Not sure if the American Pie films count as a successful career for Hannigan
The cast of Northern Exposure

Not sure if the American Pie films count as a successful career for Hannigan I don't think they were successful because of her star power. She has almost never headlined a movie and, when she did (like DATE MOVIE), it wasn't a big hit.

I think Hamm is way more quirky than we give hi credit for due to his looks. I love that he supporting roles and cameos and even stuff you can't comprehend why he is in. Still, if Hollywood ever wanted a Cary Grant type, He fits the bill perfectly.

This thread was about TV actors that couldn't become successful movie stars, not TV actors that made a bunch of forgettable films no one saw.

I didn't mention. Others users were talking about them and I wanted to make my case for them being movie stars, which I don't think it's completely connected to the success of the movie.

"I actually wouldn't have used GODZILLA as an example, since he wasn't the lead. He was the lead in TRUMBO, THE INFILTRATOR, WAKEFIELD, WHY HIM?, LAST FLAG FLYING. There's also THE UPSIDE coming up."
I was refering to that post, you used those movies as evidence of Crantson being a "successful movie star", most of those films weren't huge hits or anything so I don't see how that makes him a successful movie star.

I've seen him be quite funny. And due to his total masculine gorgeousness, one look at him and it's just drool-city. He's on the same level as Christopher Meloni. Damn fine.
Still, there are worse problems to have then drop dead hotness.

I didn't know Hamm and Christopher Meloni acted together in "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp"! Yowza! Talk about testosterone overload! I would have fainted from the heat!
