I don't know about monetarily, but artistically, I think Peter Gabriel and Neil Young were more successful, on the artistic scale, in solo work. I'm not a huge Clapton fan, but he also comes to mind. Of course all these guys still have accompanists.

If we are talking about financial success, every one of the Beatles. They were constantly getting ripped off when they were together.

Robin Trower Peter Frampton Ozzy Osbourne Ted Nugent Alice Cooper? I’m no expert but what band did Alice Cooper go solo from? Unless you consider “Alice Cooper” as a band itself and not a solo artist. Probably Gwen Stefani Eric Clapton Possibly Sting

Then the lead singer took on the name Alice Cooper and started his solo act with the album, 'Welcome to My Nightmare'.

As far as being consistently successful, it is a question mark, but I think Tragic Kingdom was more successful than any one Gwen solo album. If I'm not mistaken, it went diamond or damn close to it.

Steve Winwood Lita Ford Rod Stewart Rod Stewart? Prior to his highly successful solo career Stewart achieveed fame as singer with the Faces. I would say his solo creer built on his career in the group. Steve Winwood even more so. While he did have some success going solo, IMO the most successful part of his career would have been with Traffic and Blind Faith. One could say his popularity was hampered in the groups mainly because as a soloist he had more scope releasing singles than with either Traffic or Blind Faith whose fame rests primarily on their albums.
