There are going to be some people who can't stand some people. I can't stand Julia Roberts, I think she's smug and superior and full of herself and condescending and not as smart as she thinks she is.... And, Christ, what a phony! Now. What is it about Bette Davis that you can't stand?

I cannot stand Katharine Hepburn. One director said she had skin like a lizard, dry and super flaky. Gross. I would follow Bette Davis wherever she wanted to go. I couldn't love her more.

Well I suppose in the case of Davis, one can make an exception. God must have been a woman after all. Oh, I've broken that commandment so many times, I can do it with both hands tied behind my back!

Funny that I saw only one mention of The Nanny on this thread. That was the first Bette Davis film I ever saw and it is far and away my favorite. Her performance was one of those rare "understated" but intense performances. The little boy was great too (William Dix). It really was both of their performances that made it such a masterpiece thriller.

One performance that I love is her twin sisters in "Dead Ringer". She was great in that. In my top five favorite Davis performances.

I have seen "The Man Who Came To Dinner". It was funny, and, if I recall, Bette was more subdued than usual. The old man stole the show.

I went with Jezebel. Bette is great in so many ways. When she bows to Fonda it made me feel embarrassed for her. Also, the scene where she goes to the Ball defying convention by wearing a red dress. She causes a duel (with a surprising outcome) and finally a magnificent gesture of self-sacrifice. Everything else about the movie is top notch as well. The ending also defies convention by not wrapping everything up and leaving the outcome ambiguous. Bette is on fire in this film.
I think my second choice would have been "The Letter" which, as I write, has zero votes.

Oh, I've broken that commandment so many times, I can do it with both hands tied behind my back! Besides, Davis is more than fitting. She was a real woman and as God, she would cast out the feminist demon. Yes! She had no time for fools.

I barely remember "Jezebel" at all. I need to see it again. I think her performance in "Old Acquaintance" is very under-rated. She is very believable and likable in that movie. But her character is relatively low-key for Davis. Maybe that had something to do with not getting an Oscar nomination that year. Who can say?

Davis always said her best performance was in "A Catered Affair". I saw only part of that. I just don't like Debbie Reynolds that much. Ernest Borgnine is cool though.

I don't see it on the list, but my vote goes to The Nanny (1965).
