Independence Day: Ressuregence. Yes technically it was a "hit", though nowhere near as successful as the first one. If it was released 2, 3, maybe 5 years tops after the first one when CGI in Hollywood was still a new gimmick it could have been a lot more successful, not 20 years later when people have been overexposed to Hollywood digital effects.

There was a movie aimed at cashing in on the Village People that came out a few years after they began to decline in popularity. I think you may be referring to "Can't Stop The Music" (1980), directed by Nancy Walker. To be fair, it was part of a group of disco-themed movies that were in pre-production/production/post-production in the late 70s but were released in the early 80s. They flopped because disco wasn't popular for long.

Why did you guys pick them? I know John Carter "arrived too late" because the novel was the grandfather of modern science fiction/fantasy media. The basic plot ideas, themes, and settings that were present in the novel were told already in the Star Wars films and Avatar. Everything from the rescue-the-princess storyline, the arena battle, and the outsider who allies with the aliens against a common threat came from the book. By the time the 2012 film arrived, it no longer felt fresh.

The Two Jakes would've been popular if it had come out within a few years of Chinatown rather than 16 years later.

Vits The Lone Ranger was released right around when the public was getting sick of Johnny Depp while Tomorrowland and Jupiter Ascending both tried to ride the wave left by Avatar and relied on the reputation of their respective directors.

Vits The Lone Ranger was released right around when the public was getting sick of Johnny Depp I thought it bombed because it was a 2 1/2-hour adaptation of a property young people didn't know. Not to mention it was a western, which aren't popular anymore. Tomorrowland and Jupiter Ascending both tried to ride the wave left by Avatar and relied on the reputation of their respective directors. What does AVATAR have to do with these 2 movies? Not to mention that the latter wasn't the first or even second Wachowskis bomb. I don't know... The 1st one flopped too, so I think a sequel (especially one that's as slow and that's longer) would've flopped anyway.

And, its more of a thinking sci-fi flick as opposed to an action sci-fi flick. Yeah, it was doomed from the start. But damn its a good movie.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me Because it came out a year after the show had ended instead of during? Well, it wouldn't have been made in the first place if it wasn't for the cancellation. It was all of the above, but there were still worse movies. Which ones?
