These are the only examples I can think of at the moment: -THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE. -SLENDER MAN. -Every Y.A. dystopian adaptation since 2016 (ALLEGIANT, MAZE RUNNER 3, THE DARKEST MINDS...).

^^^ THIS. Not even Eva Green's fun bags could save this shit film . The 1st one is a flat out masterpiece in terms of bringing a graphic novel to life. The 2nd one was pretty much an utter failure all around (poorly executed , lazy direction , uninspiring performances thru out etc) . Oh and no one even went to see it in theaters either . The studio really should have worked on releasing it in 2008 (right after Grindhouse) and tried to capitalize off the box office success & following of the 1st one . But alas just too late.

Escape Plan with Stallone and Schwarzenegger. I know it has a sequel, but it's direct-to-DVD.

Oh and no one even went to see it in theaters either . Yep, remember about 3 people in the screening I saw.

I saw it in the theater and I actually enjoy the movie. It's certainly disappointing compared to the first though.

Trainspotting 2. I was the only person in my theatre, first time ever. Should've been made 10yrs later not 20.

There was a movie aimed at cashing in on the Village People that came out a few years after they began to decline in popularity. It might have been so bad that it would have flopped even had it come out at their peak.

Well I would say Goosebumps, since those books and the tv series were popular 20+ years ago. However it was a huge success, much to my surprise.

It might have been so bad that it would have flopped even had it come out at their peak. I think you may be referring to "Can't Stop The Music" (1980), directed by Nancy Walker. One negative review in some magazine was headlined: "Stop The Music". I laughed for about 15 minutes before I could do anything else.

This is an older example, but Sorcerer comes to mind. It came out when Star Wars was blowing up box office records. Sorcerer was of the early to mid 1970's American New Wave and it was increasingly evident that movie goers didn't want to watch those films anymore with the advent of the major blockbusters. I think if it had come out 2 or 3 years earlier it would have been much more successful.

A Walk in the Sun came out not long after WW2 ended and didn't do well. One of my favorites though.

Beowulf - Missed it by a few PIXAR movies, but adult centered animation still needs to be a thing and especially when they have scores as fantastic as this one did.

Princess & the Frog
Hand drawn animation has lost the battle except for closing credits.
