Given the helmsman, it's a tough choice to make, but I'd say TBYOOL represents director Wyler's finest hour(s). I would have to agree with you, for all the reasons you articulate, and also because of the immediacy of the war inherent in all aspects of the production - acting, writing, directing, viewers then and viewers now who sense the depth of the cost of the war to America, given that the film was made at the tail end of the war or immediately after (it was released Sept. 1946; the war ended Sept. 1945), because the entire cast and crew project that powerful memory fully and completely; they are haunted by it, even, and so is the audience.
