Which one would you add? With all the debate (or mainly trashing) of the Academy's idea of a Best Popular Film award I was wondering which category would be a worthy addition to the awards show.
One of the first ones that came to mind was best Stunt Work or Stunt Coordination. It will give more attention to the incredible feats performed in movies like M:I - Fallout this year. Best Ensemble would also be a good idea imo.
But if I could only add one category it would definitely be 'Best Debut Film'. The thing is, debut films are pretty much never nominated for any category and unlike the films that would be nominated for the 'Best Popular Film' category, these are movies that the mainstream audience usually doesn't know. So it's not like 'Oh they're only giving this award because they don't want to give it a Best Picture nom', but more an award to let people know that these talented new directors exist. Consider it a 'Breaktrough performance' kind of award.
And it also prevents nominating the same type of movies each year, since a director can only get nominated once in their life. By shining the spotlight on 5 of the best debut films of the year, up and coming directors will get more attention by a bigger crowd of people. It's similar to the current 'Best Foreign Film' oscar which currently gives more attention to foreign films, even if when they aren't nominated for Best Picture. And considering that many best debuts lately have been made in the sci-fi/horror genre, it could also give more attention to those genres, often overlooked by the Academy. My ideas of possible winners in the last years and this year's winner if Best Debut Film already existed:
2018: Hereditary? 2017: Get Out, Lady Bird, Coco, Molly's Game, Brigsby Bear 2016: The Witch, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Red Turtle, Under the Shadow, Lion 2015: Ex Machina, Krisha 2014: Nightcrawler, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, John Wick 2013: Fruitvale Station 2012: The Cabin in the Woods, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Chronicle, Brave

I used to think this may have been a good idea, but then considered that maybe one day someone would get killed or seriously injured pushing the limits of stunt work to achieve an award. I'd like to think people wouldn't be that stupid, but who knows.

I actually think the Popular Film category is a good idea.
It would just be a hybrid people's choice award.
Ironically, I do think the Academy voters are too snobby to consider it despite the huge amount of schlock they put out in order to support something like the Oscars.
I think stunt work would have been better back in he era of practical effects.
Overall I think the number of categories is fine as is, but it would be nice to expand number of nominated.

That’s actually a good choice.

I'm thinking, "Best Actual Film and Not Pathetic Attempt to Lick Hollywood's Politicized Balls'

I'm thinking, "Best Actual Film and Not Pathetic Attempt to Lick Hollywood's Politicized Balls' Why don't you just make that "Best Film Pushing An Extreme Right-Wing Agenda Of White Male Control"?

These days much - if not most - stunt work is aided by CGI. It might be difficult to separate out what is an actual stunt and what was performed in front of a green screen.

Acting Awards for Foreign Language films perhaps. I know some spill over to the regular awards, but surely not all the best performances are in English
