Spielberg with both Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. You have the scene of the aliens trying to get into the house and steal the kid. Later, that scene in E.T. when the astronauts come into the house. Hell, even the opening credits of E.T. are fucking creepy.
There are times when The Terminator resembles a sci-fi slasher film. Him destroying a police station, one of the safest places to be, is downright terrifying.

The heart-ripping scene in Temple of Doom was pretty intense, and was a big reason we have PG13.

The heart-ripping scene in Temple of Doom was pretty intense, and was a big reason we have PG13. Add to that child beatings, getting caught in a rock crusher, impaled with a flaming kabob, burning alive after heart is removed. Why wasn't Willie's heart ripped out?
