But, and it’s the only but, if it’s a continual hobby carried over from childhood. Like Stamp Collecting - if you start when you’re 34 it seems kinda weird. Off the cuff, “oh look there’s XYZ” autographs are 100% tacky as an adult.

To each their own not judging you still wear jerseys with another mans name on it don't you? it's cool. we're all fans you do know they're waiting for the 2 hours to be over as they're laughing at you so they can cash their paycheck though don't you?

All NFL teams should do like Seattle - and have a jersey that is for fans (#12).....

I started collecting autographs when I was 6 years old. My collection is pretty extensive. I don't have any heirs, so I've put in my will that when I croak my collection is to be sold and the money is to go to the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. By the way, I dated Mr. Wonderful's sister back in the 70's when I was still living in Vegas. Funny that I don't have a Paul Orndorff autograph in my collection!

Why would anyone have a problem with people who collect autographs?
This modern selfie culture on the other hand.

When you're old enough to realize why pros charge for autographs, that's when you're too old.
When I was 12 I thought it greasy that players wanted $80 a pop for their signature, when in essence they're printing money for you to use.

I never understood the value of having, say, a photo or a ball with Derek Jeter’s autograph. Why is someone putting their name on some item worth anything? I’d much rather have something personalized to me. “Frank, thanks for being a fan, Carson Wentz #11.” I know that personalization lowers the collector value of it, but if I got an autograph it wouldn’t be to sell it in the first place.

At first I didn't wanna get involved in the melee, there were RCMP nearby so it was likely pre-planned. Finally I said why not. I got to the 2nd last person & they ended it. I was a bit peeved only cuz I was so close. Then I realized my Olympic hockey ticket (which I was going to have signed) would've forever been Wayne Gretzky signed for no real reason - rather than it being framed as it is (commemorative offer with purchase, frames mailed out after the games*) as part of my own story.

I have zero problem with it. I have autographs of a lot of my favorite players. I've never really understood just asking for an autograph when all they're signing is like a napkin or a piece of paper. My autographs are things like a baseball or a bat where I can then display them proudly with other collectables.

Honestly I never understood autographs in general. Here's a ball the guy mindlessly signed along with 500 other balls one day. I'd rather have a memento of the actual game whether anyone signed it or not.

I'm not one that sides with athletes (or ownership for that matter) quite often.....
But I always have this impression below stuck in my head by somebody asking for an autograph.

True story - this is in the early 90s, long story short - I know some people, I'm out in Arizona for a couple weeks during spring training, I end up in the outfield early morning with the Mariners shagging fly balls. It's me and a few minor leaguers. The big name guys havent come out yet. Bob Didier was the coach, he gave me a practice jersey and hat and I played baseball my whole life so I look like a real player out there, I'm catching balls and firing them in. Finally the big name guys all start filtering out and they tell me I have to leave the field. I'm heading back to my friends and all these kids come up to me with balls asking me to sign. I keep saying "I don't play for the Mariners" (and I'm the only guy to actually leave teh field and go to where the fans are) but they don't believe me. So i say "okay" and start signing balls. So there are all these balls out there in the world with the Mariners signatures and mine on it.

This is an interesting take and well worth discussing. Let's say you were with your wife/girlfriend/children/what have you and you're a grown man getting an autograph from Pete Rose waiting in line at The King of Prussia Mall as you're standing there in jubilation as a grown man hoping Pete wishes you a Merry Christmas and makes sure to 'personalize' it. It wouldn't make you feel awkward or any less of a man?

It wouldn't make you feel awkward or any less of a man? Well, in the spirit of what you’re asking I’d be excited. In reality I’d never get Pete Rose’s autograph because a) he charges a fortune for it, b) as great of a player as he was, he’s a dirt sandwich of a human being, and c) I happen to already have a non personalized autograph of his on a baseball.

Did you sign, "Fergie Jenkins"? Naw, this was long before I was Fergie. I think online back then I was Jim Palmer but I signed my real name, lol.

It wouldn't make you feel awkward or any less of a man? Hey, some people like professional wrestling and still feel like grown men, somehow. You and I share an affinity for Halloween, and yet I just had an argument with someone who was trying to claim that such things were only for children and that it 'wasn't a real holiday.' Nonsensical as that is, I can see how some up tight, fun-hating, douche bags may take that side. I have no interest in collecting autographs, but what the hell, if anyone else does I don't care.
