I don't really like Dustin Hoffman that much. I certainly do not hate him, but he really is a little too precious (and for me to say that is a lot) and he seems like he would be super high-maintenance, even a pain in the ass.
However, he was absolutely drop dead hilarious as Dorothy Michaels. I love "Tootsie" and I love Hoffman in it. Just one of the funniest performances ever, and usually it is a female who would get those accolades from me, but Hoffman is shamelessly funny here. He really should have won the Oscar for this.
I also liked him in "Straw Dogs" and the lesser known "Straight Time".

LOL, I actually liked Dustin Hoffman as 'Mumbles' in " DICK TRACY". Yeah, I hope I don't get any flack for not going past "Rain Man", but honestly I don't know any of his other movies. As a matter of fact, I only saw "Rain Man" about two months ago, and Hoffman's performance (character?) annoyed the bejesus out of me.

He only has a handful of notable performances after Rain Man and none of them compare to his brilliant work in Rain Man and earlier.

Well I think that you would have been okay if you had also added " ALL THE PRESIDENT's MEN", " DICK TRACY", " HERO", " HOOK", " OUTBREAK", " SPHERE", " MAD CITY", " WAG THE DOG", " RUNAWAY JURY", " MEET THE FOCKERS", and " LITTLE FOCKERS" in your Poll.

One of my favorite actors. Hard to choose his best, but I think maybe Midnight Cowboy.

Okay, yeah, I forgot to add "All the President's Men", even though the movie was (as I remember) a wee dull. I totally forgot about "Meet the Fockers"; Dustin and Babs had really good chemistry and were my favorite part of that movie. The others you mentioned I know next to nothing about.

I think his award was undeserved in Rain Man, especially since he was pretty much in support of Cruise's character and that is where he should have been honored. Cruise had the more layered and impactful role. Both Cruise and Jeremy Irons in Dead Ringers went un-nominated and were more deserving of best actor than Hoffman. Even Tom Hulce gave a better performance as a dim witted man Dominik and Eugene.
I also like Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy, Little Big Man and Kramer vs Kramer, but nothing compares to his delightful creation of Dorothy Michaels.
I liked "Dominic and Eugene" when I saw it many years ago. It was a very sweet movie, and the Tom Hulce character was a lot more likeable than Mr. Rain Man.

I need to re-visit Straw Dogs.
I liked that film a lot. And Hoffman was very good in it, but it was actually Susan George who gets the acting honors here. She acted that role to near perfection.

I am not a fan of Tom Cruise, but I thought he did a good job in this movie.

She acted that role to near perfection. She is also very good in Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry. She was real and raw and an absolute pain in the ass, but just perfect. Well, that pretty much describes her character, 'Amy', in "Straw Dogs", where she is simpering, moody, sensual and in-your-face horny tease. And she did that whole part so convincingly. I've always wanted to see "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry". And it was from the mid-1970s, too...

straight time, if only because there is less of the showy and distracting 'character' performance that he is well known for. Good movie too. Followed by straw dogs and all the president's men.
Top 3 Hoffman movies..midnight cowboy ,the graduate, papillon.

/ Have followed his career since he was on a PBS program in his acting infancy. Met him once and watched him filming a couple of times on the streets of NYC. Has a pretty impressive and varied body of work.

I remember liking Little Big Man very much at the time, though I wouldn't watch it now, too harrowing. I also liked him in All the President's Men.
