Think Hartman would have done anything if he knew about this? He was tough but I don't think he'd approve of this.

Not only do I think Hartman wouldn't have done anything about the beating, I think he actually encouraged it in a subtle way. In the footlocker inspection scene when Hartman was chewing out Pyle for stealing the donut, he said to the others "You have not given Private Pyle the proper motivation" or something like that.

I actually think he would have been okay with it. For as long as he'd been doing that job, Hartman had to have known something like that would happen after he kept punishing the other men for Pyle's screw ups.

I think Hartman encouraged it. He told the men that it was their fault because they weren't "helping" him. And a soap beating hurts, but it doesn't leave permanent damage. I got the impression it probably wasn't an uncommon practice in boot camp.
