Stand By Me (1986) comes to mind. Friendship was also depicted well in The Wizard of Oz.
What are some of your fav films on the topic of friendship (especially from classic era)?

Great choices everyone. Good for me because I have not seen many of them. @ BATouttaheckCannot agree more with Of Mice and Men (1939) - What an amazing and touching movie. Both Lon Chaney Jr and Burgess Meredith delivered unforgettable moments. This is not to underestimate the remake. I simply have not seen that but would love to see that too.

Jeux Interdits (1952) - French drama, directed by Rene Clement ( Plein Soleil, Gervaise) and based on François Boyer's novel of the same name. Parisian girl orphaned in a Nazi air attack befriends the son of a farmer, and together they attempt to cope with the death and destruction that surrounds them.

Aj_June there is a sub-category of "Friendships gone bad" … all those boyhood friends where one becomes a gangster and the other one a cop ~ Cagney and Pat O'Brien style. Ben-Hur and Becket fit into this group very well.
