I’m sorry, is this 1979? Just because a movie has been around "forever" … not everyone has seen it. It's really easy to NOT openly tell a twist and it's impossible to un-read it when someone has blabbed.
As PopeyeDoyle said earlier in this thread " Should its age matter? Newer generations should still have surprises left."
To answer your question : last I looked it is not 1979 and am wondering why you asked . It was a joke. That’s why I gave the wink. But in all seriousness, you do have a valid point. I just find that spoilers for a film that is well known and has been around for well over a good period of time isn’t very apparent. Like I think what matters is how the twist is executed once you’ve seen it, not what you hear. The way I think it can be done well is through buildup and hints to suggest that something is fishy, but it isn’t shoved in your face to let you know. And to me, Ash in Alien is a perfect example of that. Basically, the way a twist works is how you see it, not when you hear it.

James Sorry .. telling of twists and endings is one of those "push the button subjects" … I tend to get a tad under the normally quite cool and collected collar. Alluding to there being a twist and not actually telling what that twist is, is a little bit easier to deal with. Of course that leaves the first time viewer aware that a twist is coming and is a whole 'nuther problem. I shall wait a while before re-watching Alien and by then may have forgotten again that there is a twist and what it is.. <-- also a joke !

So all the threads in the classic movie board that have lengthy discussions of old movies should be entirely hidden under SPOILER tags? I don't think that is needed. If you haven't seen a movie you just need to be careful about clicking a discussion thread about it.

If you haven't seen a movie you just need to be careful about clicking a discussion thread about it. Discussions of old or new movies can be interesting and in depth without spoiling them for anyone … BUT "I loved the twist that the hero wasn't really dead ." type commentary about any film does rather spoil it for someone who has not seen it... be it a silent movie or last week's opening blockbuster. It's just common courtesy to not tell all just because you have seen the film. I too don't think that total spoilerization via tags is needed . just a bit of common sense.
As I said earlier … if telling spoils the surprise , then

It is interesting that Jon Finch was the first choice for Ash. My speculation is that he would have been a red herring romantic-lead/hero so when it is revealed, much more of a shock.

He was the original actor to play Kane. Oh right right-John Hurt replaced him. Those UK people look all the same to me.
