Ill just list the movies of his I like...
1.Jerry Maguire (1996) - 9/10 2.The Color of Money (1986) - 8/10 3.Interview With The Vampire (1994) (the #1 vampire/horror themed movie hands down) 4.Mission Impossible (1996) - 7.5-8/10 -.Mission Impossible III (2006) -.Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) -.Risky Business (1983) -.War of the Worlds (2005) 9.Rain Man (1988) 10.Top Gun (1986) - 7-7.5/10 11.Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - 7/10 --.Edge of Tomorrow (2014) 13.Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018) 14.Days of Thunder (1990) - 6.5-7/10 15.Valkyrie (2008)
16.American Made (2017) - 6-6.5/10 17.Minority Report (2002) 18.Cocktail (1988) - 6/10
I have seen all of his films (i.e. that he stared in or appeared in) besides... Endless Love/Taps/Losin' It. no one has a better overall filmography than Tom Cruise and not only that he's also got the highest volume of movies I score a 7/10 or higher @ 15 movies where as just about everyone else would be lucky to have half of that figure or so.
also, it's fairly rare he will be in a below average movie or worse. it's happened but it's fairly rare. or another way to put it... a high percentage of his movies are no worse than average with most being at least a bit above average.

Vits Some of the posters have written out just what their numerical ratings mean to them. Perhaps it would be helpful if you did the same … you seem to have a "rating scale " that is unlike any other. NOT being hostile or snarky … your rating system is a truly total mystery.

It's the same as with any other human being who rates from 0 to 10. If you want to know why I gave a certain Tom Cruise movie a certain number, just ask. The mission Impossible movies showcase his continued star power. And stunt skill.

Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia showcase his acting skill. I watched Magnolia and while admiring Cruise's becoming the character, I found that character so repulsive that I fast forwarded all of the ranting scenes.

His performance of that character had an effect on you. What an amazing performance it must be to have such a strong effect.

lenlenlen1 yep.. that's whut I wuz tawkin' 'bout! Cruise has gone from being "just another young and pretty face" to being quite a good actor. Born on the 4th (as you mentioned) is another terrific performance as is his change of heart and character in Rain Man.

In many ways its as good a performance as Dustin Hoffmans because while Hoffman can hide behind all the unusual mannerisms of his character Cruise has nowhere to hide.
In fact his character starts off as quite reprehensible and is the one that grows throughout the movie's story. He is the one that has to react and make decisions, whereas Hoffman can just get in the zone of his characters physical beats.

From IMDb's trivia page:
Sir Michael Caine has revealed that Tom Cruise's performance in Rain Man was one of his personal favorites of all he'd ever seen on film
Caine found out somewhat late in his adult life that he had a brother he'd never been told about, who had lived most of his life in Cane Hill Mental Hospital, with a debilitating diagnosis of epilepsy. With great sincerity he said "Tom's performance was beautifully done."
He went on to say that "Dustin had the 'showy' part." Tom's required great discipline and a responsibility to draw the viewer into Raymond's point of view, as well as portray the painful acceptance of the limitations his brother's condition placed on their level of familial intimacy.

Cruises performance in A Few Good Men and The Firm also are pretty darn outstanding as far as becoming a non-showy character.
For me … Jerry McGuire was a miss as he was always Tom pretending to be someone who I did not particularly care for or care about. It was like he was trying too hard and not quite getting there. I know this was an incredibly popular movie but try tho' I have (several times now ).. it's finally going to the Thrift Store.
