A 99% Rotten Tomatoes score, Award Season darling, etc.
I finally got around to watching it on Amazon prime last night.
It felt like a script from a 2001 film made in 2017. I get that it takes place in 2002, but the point of period pieces is to tell stories from that time that we're taboo but we can discuss them now, or an Allegory on themes that still persist to this day. This coming of age film wouldn't have even been that bold in 2002.
What was the point? The main character is a great actress, I give it that. She was in "Brooklyn" and I think she's the next Kate Winslet, very talented. Other than that, it's not that profund or entertaining.
Did I miss something? Teacher suffers from depression, in the closet boyfriend afraid to come out, poor kid trying to fit in with rich popular kid and blows off real friend, fat shaming, father cannot find job in New age of computers, etc... It's like, let's throw 15 themes into one film. Okay...

It's far more akin to a slice of life story such as Parenthood.

Sounds like the newest ABC drama or whatever.

It's 101 Oscar-bait, story about growing up and "finding yourself" and rejecting the traditions of old...

You do wonder why critics go gaga over certain films. I thought it good and well acted. I thought the same with Juno(2007). Much more entertaining but I still wonder why so much critical acclaim. Maybe because they're low budget films so seem more deserving of accolades?
