In terms of mainstream popularity, I would say the #1 war-themed movie with guns is likely...
Saving Private Ryan (1998) ; even if someone disagrees with me, this movie surely has to be a serious contender for the #1 spot in terms of wide appeal when it comes to war-themed movies with guns.
p.s. for the record... I used to like that movie a lot but I only mildly like it now (my 6/10 score started on a re-watch on Jan 2nd 2016 as my prior viewing on Aug 30th 2012 it's 10/10 status remained). but there is really not doubt to it's mass appeal. personally... I would go with Apocalypse Now (1979)(8/10) but that movie is more about psychological stuff on character minds etc and general atmosphere where as Saving Private Ryan I think has more of a general emotional response for most people which is why I expect it to have more overall appeal with people in general even though Apocalypse Now does more for me personally at this point in time as Apocalypse Now is within my Top 52 movies straight up.
