Maybe I'm misreading here, but it appears that a majority of scientists believe in God/higher power according to the graph. The 18 dont believe in god, but a higher power. So that isnt god, but some sort of higher power. Now what's the difference? IDFK.

Exactly. Like I'd give a shyte either way?
It could have just as easily been an unreliable source/article on the web.
"Don't believe everything you see on the internet" - Abraham Lincoln
Your original statement was correct, though.
I wouldn't claim to be the authority on this........... but it's a great example of how Questions get asked........and how Statistics get interpreted.

So that isnt god, but some sort of higher power. Now what's the difference? IDFK. 51% believe in "some kind of god." That's what the graph shows. The 33% represents the God of the Bible. The 18% represents a plethora of other gods and the whole "I don't know which one it is, but I think there is some kind of god who's in charge" shtick.

Indeed. The phrases "God or higher power" or "God/higher power" are done so to show that a majority of scientists are not atheists. It could just as easily be worded, "only one-third of scientists believe in God" and look a whole lot different as a "statement" during a debate tactic.

Then that same person automatically loses all of his/her credibility and I stop taking them seriously.
It's so annoying whenever some people, specially some religious Republicans/Conservatives, start saying things such as:
- God gave us...
- When I hear God...
- I don't agree with you because God...
And etc...
Are these people still stuck in the Prehistoric Age?
It's like if I was talking to a Neanderthal in 2018.
That's one of the advantages of the Democratic Party - they don't use religion as a wedge issue to hold together their unholy coalition of plutocrats and evangelicals. That's true but the vast and vast majority of Republicans don't use religion to dictate what they think or not.
Honestly, Democrats really overreact and tend to generalize that to all Republicans.

i don't understand why some think that a belief in God automatically makes that person dumb, mentally ill or just plain not worth talking to. I can see if said person was being obnoxious, that's different. But to automatically disregard someone because they believe in a higher power is unreasonable. I never said such thing.
I said I automatically disregard them when they use God in the conversation and when it's God who/what dictates for them their own beliefs. That's insanely stupid.

Because they don't want to do all the work to explain how science works. I'm sure that's the main reason they cling to their Faith. 51% barely cuts it. And 18% of those are not specifically religious, more agnostic. You're parsing, though.......just like that questionnaire did.On the other hand www.scientificamerican.com/article/big-gap-between-what-scientists-say-and-americans-think-about-climate-change/So even more say humans are messing up our terrarium & that it's a major problem. Great. Now how many have come out as ardent advocates for global population control? And what percentage of those scientists derive their paychecks from Govt funding? I'd guess close to 100% of that 87%

It's kinda the equivalent of having a Southern accent.

This shows that the majority of scientists believe in God or a higher power, by the way. 33 + 18 = 51

I doubt that general public number very much. (95% believe either in god or god by a different name). Not a chance. I might buy 75%.

This sorta reminds me of how often I've ended up defending religious people on forum discussions........not their beliefs, per se .......but their right to them. I never saw that situation arising, but it did.
Before the last 2 years, that was about the most prevalent source of leftist bullying that I witnessed.

It's important to maintain eye contact, humour them and remove yourself to a safe distance without arousing their anger or suspicion.

So if I say that i believe abortion is wrong, because I'm a Christian and as such, believe it's a sin....however, I also believe in free will and think it should be left up to the individual to decide if they want to get one or not; my beliefs shouldn't be forced on anyone....you'd dismiss me as a loon?

A talented reporter could spin that into your belief that anyone who gets one is going to Hell. Meanwhile, all of their 'good intentions' are often doing just what has been suggested.
