I mean only in terms of acting, not his personal life like Mel Gibson.
If you answer NO, then I would like you to name an actor you would say is more divisive.

John Wayne? Some reward him as the greatest western star of all time, others see him as a rather limited actor that played the same character.

Quite possibly. I see many people say he's one of the worst actors ever, then some people enjoy him, but because they think he's amusingly bad, and then there are people who think he's a genuinely good actor.

When I was a tourist in L.A. I saw Nicolas Cage strolling down Hollywood Boulevarde. He was wearing a lime green suit and was surrounded by 5 bodyguards in black suits. What a sight. That was the early 1990s & he would have been in his late 20s. With movies like raising arizona, wild at heart and red rock west, I thought he was pretty cool at the time...but I never thought he could save a bad movie.

I mean only in terms of acting, not his personal life like Mel Gibson. No. I think everyone is agreed that he's seen better days. Its been a good 15 years since he made a really good movie. However if you want to see truly fine acting watch Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation.

I disagree that it has been 15 years since he's made a really good movie, but that has nothing to do with my question. Someone who thinks he is a bad actor (and there are many - I have even come across people who think he is bad in Leaving Las Vegas) might claim that he has gotten lucky a couple times. You answered my question, but it feels like you are basing it on your own opinion of him as an actor. I can't even think of another actor who many people think is awesome and many people think is terrible in the same way as Nicolas Cage. Seriously, who is another actor where people love his bad performances just as much as his good performances and people who think he is mostly a bad actor even before his career went down the toilet? That is why he stands out as the most divisive to me. Just out of curiosity, who is an actor you would say is more divisive?

"In Movie History". That was in the title of your thread. I refer you to my my previous reply.
I was hoping people would say NO or YES and then offer a reason why and an actor who they would say is more divisive.

Back to your question though, I agree, I think he's probably the most divisive actor in the modern era. My wife is one of those people that loves everything he has been in. I think he tends to make a few great films but then has made some notoriously bad ones. I will have to admit that Mandy is a movie that has made me more excited about modern cinema than anything else made in the past year or so though.
