I was thinking of adding a poll, but I'm not sure I've got all the contenders.
There are the three big ones of Toko Ri, Kwai, and Too Far. Then there's Remagen, which is kind of lower scale IMO, but some may think it's the bee's knees. And there are others I can't think of.
My personal pick is THE BRIDGES AT TOKO RI. Just superb. The ending says it all. The hero acts with such uncertainty that you feel it's genuine, and the book is of course genuine. William Holden's willing to abase himself to being the ultimate "anti hero", scared in a ditch, is what many of us respect, but it obviously is hated by the Beavis and Butthead group who think they'd be super macho in the same circumstances.
The others are great films, too, but TOKO RI is my choice. The very end, where the big wigs have their little drama, is touching and great drama, great theater. A great film has to work first on stage. If it doesn't work on stage, or with kids playing make believe, it isn't much of a film. This is an outstanding film.

The German film The Bridge (1959) is also quite highly regarded in some circles, although I haven't seen it to vouch for it.

Lots of good ones. I'll go with The Bridges at Toko-Ri. I've seen the aforementioned German film The Bridge and think highly of it. The final scene in Saving Private Ryan pays homage to it.

Funny thing is I like all the war films mentioned with the word "bridge" in it. I guess my favorite is The Bridges at Toko-Ri though. Great film. I love the footage of the Grumman Panthers although I think in the book they were actually McDonnell Banshees.
