If he was a poster here he’d be reported. Yes, because how dare we not just roll over when someone's explicitly calling us stupid for our enjoyment of something.

Me, before reading the blog post: "Hmm, I haven't read or watched anything from Bill Maher in quite a while. I wonder why I stopped."
Me, after reading the blog post: "Ah, that's why."

If he was a poster here he’d be reported. Yeah maybe by a bunch of wet blankets tied together posing as a man.

Never really cared for Maher, I've always found his comedic approach a bit too - can't find the right word to summarize it better - "hey I'm funny, now you better laugh or if not then well you're simply not advanced enough to get me". Still find it interesting he'd say this when he agreed to do a cameo in Iron Man 3 though, well guess even he can't say no to a paycheck.

Kind of like Rene Russo's husband being unable to resist throwing shade at the genre.

He uses some truth to present a falsehood. It is true that there is a narrow obsessive focus on superheroes--but this is due to his employers--they nurture it. He should be focusing on them, not society as if they asked for it. Fantasy adventure is found in classics of world literature so that kind of thing is not in itself juvenile, or if it is, then it suggests humans themselves are childish at heart. The pulp characters Conan, Zorro, Doc Savage etc were aimed at adults. Prince Valiant and Flash Gordon were popular newspaper strips with adults in the 1930s. However, superhero comics were said to have been marketed mainly to kids from the start, and focused on kids (have to ask the publishers why). His point about Trump is ironic because he is much closer to a strong leader character which used to be a common feature in literature. It is ironic that the same corporate executives that so aggressively promote superheroes now, regard someone like Trump as a threat.
I would contend their depictions of superheroes are anything but heroic, and much less so than in the source medium. He's right about the narrowing and dumbing down of cultural content, but he needs to look closer to home to find the source for this phenomenon.

Maher is a smug self important amazingly bigoted douchebag that desperately wishes he was black but lives in an all white gated community and is terrified of interacting with anyone not just like himself. In other words he's a typical white liberal.

I always hate it when people dismiss stories as "immature" or "inferior" simply because they feature fantastical elements. People do this to comics, animation, sci fi and fantasy all the time.

"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." C.S. Lewis

My sister mentioned this You all must not watch Real Time much. He REALLY doesn't like comic book movies & has trashed superheroes a few times. Though, yeah, loves his marijuana. And strippers. So yeah. Like all of us, he has his opinions. He has been cancelled over it before He has come out against a lot of stuff. Christians. Muslims. Religion in general. Marriage. Children. June last year bitching about superhero movies. He's getting old & curmudgeony Apparently not enough to not make an appearance in Iron Man 3.

I happen to like Bill Maher. I think he gets it right on a lot of topics, imo. BUT I disagree with him on a few things too (his views on Muslims; his opinions about space exploration; etc). This is another one of them.
You have to understand that Mr. Maher is very politically minded. And right now we are in a very politically volatile time. So his passions are greater than usual on many issues. What he's trying to say is "let's get serious, because we've got bigger fish to fry". And he's right about that.
What he doesn't seem to see is that: A) We don't have to give up one (child like wonder, and entertainment) in order to have the other (political motivation and awareness). I'm an example of someone who has both and I personally know a lot of people who also have both. And B) right after someone died (in this case Stan Lee) is not the time to be an asshole.
So to Mr. Maher I would say: If you want to be a funny man, go right ahead. If you want to talk politics, go right ahead. I like you doing both. But otherwise... shut the fuck up; Because you don't always know what the fuck you're talking about.

Bill Maher Says Outrage Over His Stan Lee Comments "Proves My Point" NOVEMBER 21, 2018 by Ryan Parker
Bill Maher addressed the backlash over his recent derogatory comments about Stan Lee and adult comic book fans while he was a guest on Larry King Now.
"The guy who created Spider-Man and the Hulk has died, and America is in mourning. Deep, deep mourning for a man who inspired millions to, I don’t know, watch a movie, I guess," Maher wrote on the Real Time website. "Now, I have nothing against comic books — I read them now and then when I was a kid and I was all out of Hardy Boys. But the assumption everyone had back then, both the adults and the kids, was that comics were for kids, and when you grew up you moved on to big-boy books without the pictures."
Maher told King in an interview posted Wednesday that he didn't know people were mad because he "doesn't follow every stupid thing people lose their shit about" on social media.
"But talk about making my point for me: Yeah, I don't know very much about Stan Lee and it certainly wasn't a swipe at Stan Lee," Maher said, with King interjecting, "You would have liked him. He was a really nice guy."
Maher continued, "Yeah, fine. I am agnostic on Stan Lee. I don't read comic books. I didn't even read them when I was a child. What I was saying is, a culture that thinks that comic books and comic book movies are profound meditations on the human condition is a dumb fucking culture. And for people to get mad at that just proves my point."

it was a disrespect and ill timed. I dont think people should speak ill of the recent dead when the dead was not a criminal in any sort.
But I think Bill Maher just let his anger on how dumb and childish comic book movies are today he could not help himself and that is still not an excuse. he even said it is all kid nonsense or something like that.
the death of stan lee is hard for us but at the same time it is a bitter reminder just how far marvel has fallen today that even maher cant help but insult the genre of comic books that marvel is suppose to be ruling?

I don't think he appreciates the irony in his stance on comic books. He thinks comic books are dumb because they have pictures instead of just words. Why should I watch his show, I can just read political discussions and satire online or in a book.
