Every line of dialogue uttered by Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce. He’s great, but I couldn’t think of anything that particularly stood out to me dialogue-wise. There are some good sequence where he has dialogue, but no line that you can latch onto and say, “Aha! Great writing!” Which is fine, of course, as movies work in context.

At one point in the film, Pierce says to a hazy Barnes... "Your work has been a gift to mankind. You shaped the century. And I need you to do it one more time..."Granted, not the most elaborate or eloquent piece of dialogue to ever come out of the Hollywood machine but, Redford's understated delivery and, the fact that he could have just as easily been talking to Steve Rogers give the dialogue some narrative weight. The super soldier is a commodity in this world - like any other soldier, and they can be manipulated by the same wringing words of duty. Rogers and Barnes are opposite sides of the same blunt instrument.

Rogers and Barnes are opposite sides of the same blunt instrument. Touché. It’s not, as you say, the most elaborate or eloquent line of dialogue ever to come out of Hollywood, but it’s good. Everson, in Classics of the Horror Film, has this wonderful passage on Lugosi’s dialogue in White Zombie: in particular, there’s this one line “ah, so now we better understand each other!” Everson writes how, out of context, the line doesn’t sound like anything special, but in context, with how Lugosi is breaking the hero’s mind down, it’s a brilliantly juicy piece of dialogue, comparable to “listen to them—the children of the night!” or his other dialogue from Dracula. I think it’s that way with Pierce’s lines; they depend on context and Redford’s stellar underplaying. And the line you’re emphasizing oddly reminds me of a horror film… Maybe Sleepy Hollow? (Spoiler: Miranda Richardson says something like “rise, my Horseman, I need you once more!”) It’s almost like Pierce is Peter Cushing’s Dr. Frankenstein and Bucky Barnes his Monster. Huh. I’d never thought of that interpretation before.

What if Pakistan marched into Mumbai tomorrow, and you knew they were going to drag your daughter into a soccer stadium for execution, and you could stop it with a flick of a switch... wouldn't you?" - Alexander Pierce

I’d never thought of that interpretation before. That is where my thinking on the dialogue took me - definitely Frankenstein and his monster. There are also other minimalistic pieces of dialogue uttered by Pierce that are well executed and reward the faithful comic book reader. Speaking to Black Widow in the third act... Throughout the film, Natasha has flaunted her "moral flexibility" and skill at compartmentalizing conflicting agendas and information. Her portrayal in Winter Soldier is more in line with specific iterations of the comic book character who has a more fluid interpretation of right and wrong. Traditionally, Natalia Romanova is more concerned with 'her own precision' as opposed to which side she is fighting for or for what cause. In that context, she very much reminds me of Von Sydow's Joubert in Pollack's masterwork, Three Days of the Condor. The dialogue is executed to perfection by Redford. He is telling the Black Widow that she will engineer the circumstances of her own downfall. She will dismantle the one thing she values most --- her own anonymity. No one knows anything about the Black Widow --- not really. Personally, ideologically and even professionally, she is a cipher. We only know the things they say about her...In this regard, she can be aligned almost perfectly with Joubert in Condor. Redford's sinister chiding and the callbacks to Condor are a nearly euphoric payoff for the devoted cinephile and comic book reader.

Redford, never for a moment, condescends to the material or concedes to being in a fantasy. He plays it as if it were all real and had meaning.

Tony Stark:[to Loki] You’re missing the point. There’s no throne. There is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe your army comes, and maybe it’s too much for us, but it’s all on you. Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we’ll avenge it.

And he seems to boost up the rest of the cast while he’s at it–everyone brings his/her a-game. It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s a really good one. Even if I prefer Iron Man just for its fun, The Winter Soldier is probably the best film, considered as a film, of the whole MCU.
