It's rare to have a comedy sequel be better than the first film, but for many people, that's what happened 25 years ago when "Addams Family Values" came out. Granted, being better than the first film wasn't a huge hurdle to overcome like it was when sequels to Star Wars and The Godfather were made, but just getting a good comedy sequel, let alone one better than the first, is still quite an accomplishment.
So why exactly is this sequel so superior to the first film? I chalk it up to having a better story and a better female villain mostly in addition to sharper comedic jokes, lines and gags. The storyline of a golddigger trying to get Uncle Fester's money is much better than the fake doctor and lawyer trying to get the family fortune by manipulating an amnesic Fester in the first film. Also, Joan Cusack is a hoot as Debbie and much better than that fake doctor. Going back to the storyline, the idea of the kids being sent to Summer camp reeks of comedic possibilities and thankfully director Barry Sonnenfeld, writer Paul Rudnick, and the cast (especially Christina Ricci) take full advantage of them.
I won't say this sequel is one of the greatest of all time in cinema, but perhaps it can be more of an honorable mention. The cast members are still solid in their roles and it feels like there is more emphasis on comedy and satire compared to the first film. For the record, I do like the first Addams Family film even though it's inferior to this film, but this sequel has so much more comedic bite to it and more memorable bits, iines and gags in addition to the better storyline and villain.

I have a big soft spot for this and I am certainly one of those who thinks it is miles better than the previous film. Joan Cusack and Christina Ricci are hilarious, and the summer camp sub-plot is close to genius. 7/10

The height of Christina Ricci's acting career.
I love this film. Raul Julia is great.

The whole cast was great. Agreed, the summer camp, especially the Thanksgiving play, was very good.

Huge fan of this one and I agree that it shits all the over the 1st one. Like they really upped the quality with this one . It moves at a brisk speed & the jokes all work for me at least .
The summer camp subplot (with the Thanksgiving play) is some hilarious shit .
8/10

It's been a long, long time since I watched this movie. As a result, my memory of what transpires is quite fuzzy. I do agree that it is a very good sequel, but nonetheless contend that the original remains the superior movie.

I'd say the summer camp was the big selling point for me. It was hilarious, and I loved Ricci's tone when her surprise monologue got dark and gruesome. The counselors were just as entertaining.
However what really did it for me was Joan Cusack's Debbie. She's totally nailing it 100% time she's on screen. She's also playing perfectly off the legendary Christopher Lloyd (who I'm glad got a little more to do now his character was a little more fleshed out). I wish they'd have found some way to bring Dan Hedaya's character back from the first movie...he's the only one appearing solely in the first I noticeably kind of missed when watching the sequel.
2 for 2, Raul Julia IS Gomez Addams. Since we already know the family going into the sequel, most of the main characters get a little more complexity. Gomez has some really great scenes and Julia is electric throughout.
The two remind me of (to compare to another Burton series) "Batman 89" and "Batman Returns." Both very good, but very different movies. The first was about meeting the characters, the second was taking characters we already knew and throwing them headfirst into more complicated problems. Maybe it's just my take.
Both Addams Family movies are about neck and neck for me. If I had to give the edge, I'd give it to the second because Fester is hilarious looking in all white...and Debby...well, Debby is looking pretty extremely good in her white dress. I always found Joan Cusack very attractive...and here she was particularly on fire. That isn't to take away from her awesome performance...just saying she was pretty easy on the eyes as well

He was great in the first one and I wish he could've been included in the sequel. Maybe they could have had him in cahoots with Cusack's character after having somehow escaped being buried alive at the end of the first. Also as for Batman, I like the comparison, but you know Burton didn't direct the Addams Family movies, Barry Sonnenfeld did.

I might have mixed them up, and they have faded back in my memory, but thanks to game here on this site I found out that it was Christine Baranski who played one the summer camp leaders, in one of her earliest roles:

I do agree that it is a very good sequel, but nonetheless contend that the original remains the superior movie. Why do you think the original is superior? Just curious. I first saw it on Halloween (many moons ago) and it was my first introduction to the characters and their world. I loved the mansion setting and the humour and the creepy vibe. And the story itself I found quite moving. Like, I was genuinely sad at times while watching it. It touched the full gamut of my emotions. The sequel I also liked a lot, but it didn't have quite the same impact on me and hasn't stuck in my memory in the manner of its predecessor. Still a very good movie though.
