I was at Target earlier and they had 2018 prints of Guns N Roses "appetite for destruction" and Britney spears' "baby one more time" on audio cassettes. I didn't have my phone so I didn't get a picture but they're also listed on Target's website along with a few others www.target.com/c/new-music/cassette/-/N-5deeeZf6dgfAnd on Mariah Carey's Instagram story, she's advertising a cassette preorder of her new album

I noticed the resurgence about 2014, when Madlib released his album, 'Pinata', on cassette only. It sold so well, they eventually released it on CD.
So, cassettes were probably popularized two years before then, but I'm not a hipster, so couldn't really pinpoint it.

There's no accounting for taste. Or tape hiss.

WHY?! Vinyl DESERVES a comeback, BUT tape?!?! I just DON'T see why! I NEVER heard or read anyone preferring it.

I note that the picture says "Limited Edition Cassette Tape". I buy new albums from Amazon.com regularly, and they don't seem to offer anything on cassette, only digital, CD, and vinyl.

It's probably being released as a special collector's item.

I wonder how many of the people who buy these cassettes even have a player for them. And if they do have one, do they actually play them? Or is it as ck100 said above - a collector thing. And if so, how does the Stranger Things OST fit into that?

I saw some blank tapes and a cassette player/recorder for sale at Walmart the other day...
I was surprised that these were being sold at a major store chain, instead of just some specialty store...
I can see some people needing players to play cassettes long since stored in an attic... or maybe wanting to record meetings/speeches, ETC... I suppose there might be a few people wanting to make mixed tapes for their older car stereos...
But the technology, still seems a bit outdated to be selling new products...
But selling Music Albums really seems like a WTF moment...
What's next... 8-Track Tapes? VHS movies?
By the way, has anyone seen the Video Tape style packaging slip covers Walmart has for some of their Blu-ray movie releases, such as "Last Action Hero"?
Oddly, a few of their titles are new movies, which came long after VHS Tapes went the way of the dinosaur...
Not sure what is with the retro stuff all of a sudden...

Not sure what is with the retro stuff all of a sudden... I don't mind retro. Most things, anyway. Fashion, cars, music, etc. Like Jim Beam used to say, 'you always come back to the basics.' But cassettes? Being somewhat of an audiophile myself, I understand the vinyl resurgence, but I'm not seeing any good reason for cassettes. Home recordings and mix tapes for cars don't warrant major production lines. Seems to me that in this case at least, it's just retro for the sake of being retro.

Being somewhat of an audiophile myself, I understand the vinyl resurgence, but I'm not seeing any good reason for cassettes. I don't get it either. Vinyl has always been awesome. but cassettes have always been a hassle especially the portable cassette players that didn't have a rewind button. Those would play the tape too fast and it would sound like the uploads on youtube where the person raises the pitch to avoid being auto-cited for copyright infringement. So Annoying

So Annoying Before CD's, I would record my new LP's to cassette, then just play the tapes, thus preserving the LP's. Stereo eat your tape? No problem. Just make another from the LP that has only been played once before. It was great. But trying to give new life to them now just seems pointless to me. It's gotta be money.
