A couple of the most horrifying scenes ever are in this classic. One of them is the one with the two soldiers in the jeep. The other is the two campers.
The two campers presents us with the ultimate "pathos" scene.
The giant tarantula comes upon two happy campers one night. They run.
One of them stumbles and is sure prey to the giant tarantula. The other camper turns to help the man in a doomed scenario, and both are killed.
So, would you do that? Would you do that for a Klondike bar? What would be the point at which you might do it?
First of all, if the guy is your only brother, you may be more willing. I think a close relative or maybe a woman or a child is the only one I would help.
But not against a gigantic spider from which there is no hope.
I wouldn't do it in a hopeless situation. I think a giant grizzly is hopeless, unless I have some brief hope of my own. A spray, a weapon. If there's even a small chance of backing him off, I probably try it. Same for a tiger. There has to be a ray of hope, though.
I don't do it with a Blob. If the blob is harmless, it doesn't matter. If it isn't, I won't be any help any way.
In the water, crocodile or shark. I think I do help. My chances won't be very good any way if I'm far from shore, so if I'm going down, I don't want it to be in humiliation. If I'm close to shore, there's a good chance that two of us can fight our way to shore. I may weigh the situation, though, and wonder if getting help might be the best option. Two wounded men unable to move in water or on land, probably just die slower. Sharks are more "biters" than absolute eaters, so with a shark I'd go for help. Crocodile is different.
What would you do? Lets say it's not your brother, but someone you like.

If the script tells you to do it, you do it.
You understand that concept, right?

This topic was covered in a thread for this film on IMDb back when they had boards. One respondent told how'd he leave his friend with a prosthetic leg behind IF this EVER happened to them.
