It was way too rapid fire and they hadn't really nailed down the chemistry. That's not exclusive to the new version: The transition from Joel to Mike, and Trace to Bill, were initially odd since MST3K is like watching movies with some friends and the transitions were like having some new kid you didn't know show up to movie night. It takes time to make it work. Still, I thought it was alright and don't have the hate for it a lot of misties have.

Joel is involved as producer after all. Of course, the classics will always be the best, though.

My only problem with it was that it felt like they were trying to fit in as many jokes as possible whereas the original series, even the later faster-paced seasons, would occasionally let the movie breathe a bit and speak for itself. I'll have to watch them. Thanks for the heads up.

It is just excellent on its own and it's like 5 minutes:

Har Har Superstar as the band leader was an inspired choice.
He was the opening act for the film at a Lebowski-fest I went to. He put on a leotard and did the landlord's "dance cycle."

I don't understand why anyone would want to watch a movie where someone unrelated to the film speaks over it to tell jokes. I saw the feature movie they did--ok I was amused at times, but on average I'd rather just watch the movie and laugh at whatever I find funny.

I think it's a marked improvement on the first season. One of the highlights was actually one of their skits, which I usually don't care for, and a musical skit no less, which I really don't care for (aside from the ones in Pod People and Final Sacrifice). It was in the episode The Day Time Ended. They also had an extremely clever meta joke in another episode: There are some trippy visuals going on and the bots ask Jonah if it was from the Tom Baker Dr. Who or Colin Baker Dr. Who and he replies that he was more of a Chris Eccelston fan. Very witty if you know the history of both shows. I thought it was good overall and demonstrates that they have the potential to come into their own as show-runners. Definitely worth a binge watch. I'm just worried that the uneven first season wore out their welcome and this one won't get enough attention.

I've seen a lot of criticism of season 1, but let's not pretend the classic series never had it's share of bad episodes, I can think of several where I didn't laugh once. I watched Ator from season 2, which was very funny and started Mac and Me, but wasn't liking it so I might skip it till later on.

Even the die-hard fans tend to forget they had a lot of clunkers and that the series took 5 seasons to get consistently decent. I doubt even they go back and watch the first season or most of the second season. I think of the newest season, The Day Time Ended was the highlight. Mac and Me didn't do it for me but I consider that a legitimately entertaining bad movie on its own so seeing it cut up to fit their format was jarring. That's one complaint I do have: it seems like they edit down the movies a lot more than the old series ever did.

One thing that Netflix did right was release a Thanksgiving binge-watch set. Good call-back to the old Comedy Central marathons that were run when MST3k was still on that network.
MST3k always had the odd clunker. Never did like Fire Maidens From Outer Space, except for the classic line "This is what Baptists think Catholic Mass is like." And while it had good context, Zombie Nightmare was also one I couldn't take.
The two Christmas films, on the other hand...

Haven't made it that far yet. On the other hand, the end of Season 1 also had a cliffhanger.

Yeah, I never watch MST3K in chronological order, I just start with whichever movie looks the funniest to me.

Agree 100% with bartlsby. The classic MST3K knew when to let the movie go. As bad as the movie was, it was important to be able to follow the film. With the new ones, the just "shotgunned" the riffs, hoping to hit with something. They did a lot. It wasn't as bad as what some fans made it out to be. And it did take Joel and company 3-4 years to find the right mix. The early ones had too little talk sometimes.
