I have only seen a very bad public domain version if White Zombie 1932. ![](http://i.cdn.turner.com/v5cache/TCM/Images/Dynamic/i237/whitezombie1932.95704_092720130353.jpg) Wish I remember where I've read that a remake was made impossible because, while the movie is indeed in public domain, the story isn't or wasn't. Revolt of the Zombies 1936, wasn't a sequel, even if it is, but one is not allowed to say it, because relatives of the writer that copyrighted the original story went to court and won, so even if this is a sequel to the one with the words White and Zombie in it's title, it's illegal to say so. Very early leading role of future Oscar winner Dean Jagger.

I love this movie. One of the greats of classic 1930's horror.

The movie fell into the public domain so Bela Lugosi's character was used as a bad guy in an 80s-90s comic book-- I remember reading about it..

I remember. It's content was hijacked by white supremacist groups who didn't clearly and concisely explain any of their supposed findings. Didn't get it myself, not one little bit. I think this was a superhero or pulp comic. It must have had corporation backing otherwise it would never have been talked about it in Comicscene magazine.
I remember the comics writer saying he needed a villain for the protagonist, and realized Legendre was public domain so used him.

I saw a VERY CLEAR version of White Zombie many years ago when SyFi channel (or whatever it was called then) did a Halloween Weekend Festival hosted by Dana Gould.
Vampira was one of the guest he interviewed. She had no two front teeth.
As for the film itself, other than Bela's over the top performance, I did not (and still do not) find it very interesting.
I remember Soupy Sales using a shot of a zombie falling into one of the 'mills' on many of his shows.

I've seen a crummy public domain version of this and the Cary Roan special edition blu ray. It makes a tremendous difference watching a restored version. It's a wonderfully shot film and Lugosi and wonderfully creepy.

I love this movie. One of the greats of classic 1930's horror. Did you see the follow-up 'Revolt Of The Zombies'? It's so different, bizarre even, but I like it. No, I don't think I've seen it. Hopefully someday.

I also saw it not so long ago for the first time on some scratchy public domain DVD, but it was still good. Bela having success outside of Dracula was a good thing. I know Rob Zombie named his band after this movie. ![](http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2SOf1MGAPkE/S7NIngWk-QI/AAAAAAAAAPs/qxUIaAetkzA/s1600/White_ZombieAstro_Creep_2000Frontal.jpg)
