It needed to be made after the characters were fully developed. You know for a fact that Butters and Randy would’ve had more impact on the plot and Eric Cartman would’ve been more psychotic.

I was like 12 when it came out so it was perfect for lil edgy me to download Uncle Fucker on Napster and listen to it again and again and again and watch the movie again and again and again and joke about Sadam Hussein and Satan's dick.

I'd say it was made at exactly the right time. Butters and Randy got overexposed, and Cartman being a psychotic idiot savant was a master stroke in Scott Tenorman Must Die but likewise got played out. Those things along with the overabundance of Trey and Matt's politics were why I eventually stopped watching the show.
I shudder to think of that movie not existing and instead having a SP movie where Cartman, Randy, and Butters are the only characters who matter whilst having libertarian bulls**t shoved down my throat.

I think its fine the way it is. Sometimes I think they use Butters too much. I like him better in small doses.

Politely disagree, yet there certainly should've been another 1-2 films since 2000. I feel like they reached peak pop culture with election 2016. They've since reversed from serialized seasons.

I think it was made at about the right time. A season or two later might have been good, but not too long after that.
If it came out now or after the characters had been established it would have been too overexposed by then and the movie wouldn't have felt like it was pushing the envelope.

It came out too early for hardcore fans.
It came out at the perfect time for mainstream.
So they made the right choice financially.
For example, I was a teen at the time and it was pushing the envelope. I was into it. I haven't watched a season of South Park in so many years. A film now wouldn't interest me. There are millions more like me.

IMO they were ahead of their time ( in regards to the PC culture movement & censorship) . Easily one of the best films to come out in 1999 . I was just a scrawny little teen at the time and was just getting into South Park at the time & remember seeing the film in theaters in a packed theater . The whole audience was dying laughing through out including my friends & I. 9/10

also, for those saying they have gave up on South Park you are definitely missing out! Now I haven't seen all the new episodes from this season but most of the ones I've seen so far have still been hilarious as hell . Cartman making fun of the Black Panther movie had me dying.

Trey and Matt essentially retconning Manbearpig (and thus basically apologizing for their climate change denial) has made me consider watching again, I'll admit.
