7/10. The second best of the Hobbit series. Martin Freeman is perfectly cast. Richard Armitage and Ian McKellan are great. The effects are mostly good though that last chase scene gets real cartoony by the end.

This one I liked a lot (especially the atmosphere in the Shire in the beginning), I thought its two sequels were dreadful.

I was a huge fan of Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy (and the books, way before that), and I enjoyed the Hobbit movies, with some reservations. At some point I got burnt out, though. I didn't finish watching the extended 'Battle of the Five Armies' dvd when I got it three years ago, and never got back to it until recently. Now I'm fully revisiting these movies; extended editions, commentaries, "making of" segments, etc. I'd say my criticisms fall into three major areas: characters design, added material, and extended action sequences. Character design is usually the most fleeting quibble; even if the look of the character greatly deviates from my imagination, I can ultimately accept it. Most of the time, Jackson and his people nail it or at least come up with something you won't forget (i.e. Radagast with his shit-stained face, Great Goblin with his ball-sack chin, Bifur with axe in his head, etc.) Extra material never bothered me too much if there was textual support for it. No problem with seeing Galadriel/White Council, Dol Guldur subplot because we know that was happening at the same time, even if a fairly minor thing in the original 'Hobbit' novel. By now, I've come to accept the original story elements that Jackson and his screenwriters came up with, also. But some of the extended over-the-top action sequences just seem a bit too much for me. Still, nothing in this movie is as ridiculous as the scene in 'Battle' where Legolas is running on falling stones (I can just imagine Peter Jackson saying, "wouldn't it be cool if the tower was collapsing and Legolas pulls a Wiley Coyote and runs on the air for a while?" Er, no). I find Thorin's final speech in 'Unexpected Journey' ("I was never so wrong!") cringingly corny, and I feel some of the gravitas of the LotR films was lost with the heavy reliance on cgi. Overall, I'd give 'An Unexpected Journey' about a 7.5, with my favorite part of the movie actually being everything that happens before the main characters leave The Shire.

I'll go with a 7 for this one. A 2 for both sequels. At least this first one only had one silly chase scene, before that, we got a great world, good characters and some fun. After this movie, it all went downhill so fast (or rather, halfway during the second movie, the river scene started it all, that was beyond ridiculous and it never got better again imo)
But this first one, flawed and all, was fun and gave me hope for the trilogy. Shortlived, sure, but still.

8/10. A greatly enjoyable film that in my opinion captures and carries the soul of the LoTR. It is obviously not as grand and as epic, which I think is what led to many people being "disappointed" in it, but I honestly felt it was as good as it could have been.
