She and her husband Willard Huyck wrote such movies as American Graffiti and Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom. And they were script doctors on Star Wars. She died at age 76 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

Even a really good screenwriter has a few duds, but with Howard the Duck aside, she was a really good screenwriter. George Lucas needed good writers like her and Lawrence Kasdan to get to where he is since his dialogue tends to make the actors look robotic and stiff. Rest in peace, Gloria.

What about good directors? He had other directors direct Empire and Jedi. You need good directors, too, but it helps to have a strong foundation with a well-written shooting script. A good director can make a polished turd of a film from a weak script, but it's still a turd. |
