Elvis is 136M units at #2 and Garth Brooks is at 148M at #1.
Only the Beatles have sold more at 172M.
However, in the US, Garth is ahead of the Beatles for the #1 overall (Solo or band).
Also, guess who sold the most concert tickets in 2016 and 2017? Garth. He sold more concert tickets than Beyonce! By far, she's a distant second. He didn't tour last year.
Finally, he's doing a STADIUM TOUR in 2019, that's kicking off at Notre Dame. That's right, this man can fill Football Stadiums. 100+ thousand people per concert.
Who knew?

Remember when he had an alter-ego named "Chris Gaines" in 1999?

How can country music be so popular and hated at the same time?
So many people say "I listen to everything except country and rap" that it's become a cliche, but they're the two most popular genres. It's a paradox. Sort of like how everybody claims to hate McDonald's and not shop at Wal-Mart.

You hear people say "I listen to everything except country and rap" because people who listen to country and rap are too stupid to be talking to you about music. And those stupid people are the majority. Just like you probably don't talk to people who eat at McDonald's and shop at Wal-Mart.

The South and to a lesser extent the Midwest is in love with that stuff. Even here in California, it has a fairly large following (mostly inland though):

Well, the story behind this character was they were going to make a fake autobiographical film about the rise and fall of American rock star Chris Gaines. So Garth was going to spend a year coming out to public places dressed as Chris Gaines. Then when the press and buzz went nuts trying to figure it out... BOOM! They were going to announce the film and people were going to go "ooooohhhh that's what is going on." You can't buy that kind of free publicity. The film got scraped in pre production and then it left the public going wtf was that?
